That Terry is a clever cat. Nothing gets by him, not even a cavity in the mouth of a patient with halitosis.
MSU now in firm control of the B1G Ten race with their win over Purdue yesterday. Iowa's win over the Hoosiers a big surprise, and Whisky handled Penn State easily at the Kohl Center.
A little thread drift....I see that Greg Oden has had another surgery, that was more extensive than thought to be...he was drafted in 2007...I wonder if he'll ever play. I can't help but think of Sam Bowie.
Terry, Sad state of events for Oden to be sure, not to mention the Blazers. That would be a bitter pill to swallow considering the money involved. Greg's bone structure plus is gigantic size has been a disaster.
Article about Kelsey Barlow speaking about his dismissal. Both he and his Dad (former ND player) take the high road. http://www.purdueexponent.org/sports/mens/basketball/article_b7daeaea-5bf9-11e1-a0f4-001a4bcf6878.html
Stu, I read all 3 of your articles. Thank you for posting them. I especially appreciate the class shown by Ken Barlow and, by extension, his son. I found interesting the comment that education is a priority in the family. Thanks.
I remember Ken Barlow, good player. Tough situation for all involved, the younger Barlow was not supposed to be where he was and now he's hurt his teammates as well as himself. I hope he's learned something from this and maybe he'll play again at Purdue or some place else.
Don, Just like when the Trailblazers passed on Michael Jordan to draft the big man Sam Bowie, they now have passed on Kevin Durant to take the big man Greg Oden. History repeats itself.
Oden's case is sad....he is a delightful kid. Make him Exhibit A in why an underclassman looking at a high draft pick needs to make the jump. Imagine how different his circumstances would be today if he had stayed another year in Columbus.
Ohio State back to winning ways with some solid shooting percentages against Illinois. They can be madding to watch at times. Michigan got a scare from Northwestern but pulled it out in the second half.
It could be that the coffin already was nailed shut after the devastating loss to Nebraska. I thought I heard during last night's game that in the latter part of the game, Nebraska outscored Illinois by 30+ points. That's the kind of loss that, when comparing the two teams on paper, makes you scratch your head in wonder.
It was Tuesday....poor Shannon Scott. He is coming along as a ball-handler and defender, but I am certain that still to this day, I would take every penny he has in a shooting contest and I would give him odds.......where is Jon Diebler?????
Purdue hangs on to tournament hopes by beating Nebraska at home. I figure we absolutely have to keep taking care of business and win at home against PSU. Our other two games are road games at Mich and Indiana...gotta go down as most likely losses. So if we win against PSU and scrape together one tournament win, we will finish at 21-13 and 9-9 in regular conference play. Should be good enough to at least make the tourney. Hummel starting to heat up. Season high 29 points. He is feeling better and able to practice more. Byrd played and got 15. Big cheer when he hit the first 3 pointer he shot.
Iowa nipped Wisconsin last night in Iowa City as red hot Matt Gaten scored 33 points. In a side note, Aaron Craft has been named to the academic all-american first team! Congratulations Aaron!
Purdue beat Michigan convincingly at Ann Arbor. This certainly helps Purdue's resume for the NCAA tournament.
Thanks, guys. Terry, I thought we were probably in anyway, barring a collapse, but this gave us the "road win against a top 25 team" that everyone said we lacked. We are 4-1 since our Ohio State loss, and have played very well during that stretch (including a good game against the Buckeyes). We match up pretty well size wise with Michigan...not so much against MSU and Indiana.
Re: Purdue. Three things. 1) When Barlow was kicked off the team, senior Ryne Smith in a press conference used the term, addition by subtraction, which to me was telling about how the other players felt. 2) Using the "next man up" approach, Barlow's dismissal opened the door for Terone Johnson, who, based on his monster game against Michigan (22 points), is a more accomplished scorer than Barlow ever was. 3) Purdue's defense last night was outstanding, especially at critical times during the game when MI had gained the lead and the momentum. This is a different team, but I'm not sure what that means re: the BT or NCAA tournaments. As Stu said, they matched up very well with MI. We'll see what the immediate future holds for the Boilers. One thing is certain. Painter is a heckuva coach.
