ESPN is reporting that the Bucs and Schiano are working out the details on the contracts but that it's pretty much a done deal. I'm pretty surprised at this, he has been modestly successful at RU although he seemed to peak a few years ago. Mainly this has to suck for the recruits that RU has ready to sign on Feb 1. There is one kid who was a PSU recruit who switched to Wisconsin when all the stuff hit the fan in Happy Valley, then switched to RU when half of the Wisconsin staff left to various places (like Pitt). Now RU will be searching for a new HC.
It just occurred to me that it's too bad Weis has already taken the Kansas job, Charlie at RU would have been a natural fit. He'd have been able to have started his own Reality TV Show. The Boss and Bon Jovi could have been his Coordinators!
George, just curious, is that his total salary or just what is covered by the State? Most coaches get a salary then other $$$ covered by the athletic department and sponsors.
Not to mention that whole stadium expansion and upgrades to football facilities that Schiano convinced RU that they had to have inorder to compete. Didn't they have to cut the budget to some academic things to be able pay for it?
Good article from this morning's Asbury Park Press <r><URL url="http://www.app.com/article/20120126/NJSPORTS0210/301260096/Schiano-leaves-Rutgers-unfulfilled-promises"><s></s><LINK_TEXT text="http://www.app...s-Rutgers-unfulfilled-promises</LINK_TEXT><e></e></URL></r>
Tough words for a guy who spent 11 years there and raised the program from the ashes. Let's not focus on what he did. Let's just crucify him for what he didn't do. That's Jersey for you. (George, I say this knowing you're not a native Jerseyite.) Re: the stadium expansion. They sound like a kid caught in the act, saying, he made me do it. Sheesh!
Bob Diaco supposedly a candidate for the Job. I hope he doesn't leave ND, we've got a talented defense with a lot of young players so his job here is not done. Not to mention from what I've seen of him with regards to media sessions he's not ready to be a HC either. He'd be better to stay 2-3 more years at ND and then move to good MAC job before jumping into a tough BCS job like RU.
Amen to that Sid....wow, the guy built the program from ZERO to a very solid competitor. Of the seven bowl games in the history of the school, Schiano led them to 6 in the last 7 years and has 5 bowl wins in 6 games. They didn't start playing a real D1 schedule until the 80's. Their only bowl game - EVER - prior to his arrival was 1978 - they played AZ St and got whacked in the "Garden State Bowl". This their record year, they lost to Colgate, beat Yale by 1, struggled against Holy Cross and pulled out a hard fought victory over Bucknell to go along with their wins over Princeton and Columbia! He built them into a nationally ranked program program and played no small part in the beginning of the lean years for Penn State early in this decade due to the substantial inroads he made into their historically exclusive east coast recruiting base..... I hate stories like that....what the guy did there almost singlehandedly was extraordinary. Very few in the profession have done as much and I'm personally unaware of any that have done more in recent history.....
I recaall rumors in the past that he was hoping to follow Paterno at Penn. St. It doesn't surprise me that with that job filled he's leaving for "greener" pastures.
He was a great D coordinator at Miami and I didn't realize he was from Florida I thought NJ. He's a great recruiter and I always thought he would replace Paterno. I think more than anything the up down and all around teeter totter they call the Big East factored into his decision. He might work great in the NFL..
I did also Ralph, in my view it was between he and Golden and once Golden re-upped at one of those Florida schools  I assumed it was a done deal to go after Schiano. Perhaps they did and he declined but I think they will regret not getting him if they indeed ever had the opportunity. Perhaps he'll come back after his tour in the NFL ends....
Schiano is a New Jersey native. I'm reasonably certain that he played college ball at Penn State. The following is from a Bleacher Report article by Matt Smith dated Jan. 26, 2012, regarding the possibility of Bob Diaco (ND's DC) becoming Rutgers next HC:
Greg Schiano Date of birth: June 1, 1966 (age 45) Place of birth: Wyckoff, New Jersey Position: Linebacker College: Bucknell Awards: 2006 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year 2006 Walter Camp Coach of the Year 2006 Home Depot Coach of the Year 2006 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year 2006 Big East Coach of the Year Team(s) as a coach/administrator: 1989 1990 1991–1995 1996–1997 1998 1999–2000 2001–2011 2012–present Rutgers (GA) Penn State (GA) Penn State (DB) Chicago Bears (def) Chicago Bears (DB) Miami (DC) Rutgers Tampa Bay Buccaneers
I was wrong about where he went to college. He coached under Paterno. That's where the association was.
