According to ESPN and Gene Smith, Ohio State AD, we will learn exactly what the penalites will be. I am just glad it is all coming to closure, good or bad.
Expect the national outrage over the perceived slap on the wrist and special treatment for tO$U to commence shortly thereafter.....
Can I start before the announcement, I'd like to get in my digs early so I can focus on the Criminoles arrest records!
I've been going lightly on the Buckeyes throughout this whole affair because deep down I just knew the Gators would be facing OSU in the Gator Bowl with the potential existing of a major ass whoopin of UF as a payback.... So I don't need to stir anything or anybody up on the eve of such a looming embarassment.... 8)
It appears that Ohio State will be banned from any post season bowl games and Big Ten Championship games for the 2012 season. Nine scholarships bans over three season and an extra year of probation through 2013. (Increase of three over self imposed penalties) Jim Tressell hit with five year Show Clause. Penalties harsher than anticipated, but I am not unduly surprised. Time to accept the penalties and move on.
Worse than expected, but it is what it is.....you screw up, you pay the price. Time to deal with it and move on....
Aww....he's just avoided his usual first season Outback Bowl invitation with these penalties. It's Rose Bowl or better in season two for Urbs.
Here's the link. Ohio State Penalties Seems to be that Tressel's penalty is harsher than the University penalties. 3 scholarships a year can be handled so that it is hardly noticeable. Losing one year of Conference and bowl championship appearances will pass soon enough.
Not exactly sure what the 5 year "Show Cause" penalty on JT means. It seems to be the harshest, but I would think it should be since he's the guy that independently decided to break the NCAA rules and lied about it. The bowl ban/B10 CG is no biggie and the 3 scholarships a year should not hurt the Bucks too much. I believe Urban will put together an excellent class this year starting from behind and even with smaller numbers for next year he'll still have a class loaded with talent. He's that good a recruiter.
Doc The Show Cause puts a burden on any school that hires Tressel. I think that if a school does hire him, they get some real bad sanctions if there are any violations while he's there. It's a leper tag.
I agree with all of you. You gotta pay to play. You have a great coach coming into a great tradition. Go Bucks!
Nobody has mentioned how mishandled this thing was from the start. Ohio State completely misread the tea leaves. Our athletic director and compliance director have had us on the defense like a little kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar instead of proactively trying to understand the problems and addressing them. For one thing, if we had self-imposed a ban on this year's bowl game...and if we hadn't let the transgressors play in last year's Sugar Bowl...then perhaps we wouldn't have had the 2012 postseason ban... And then...Glory Be!...the new kids and coach would not be paying the penalty for the class that committed the transgressions. Oh, and let's not forget that a kid (who may be a good kid...probably is) who got himself tangled up in not one, but two scandals...thus missing 6 games...when his team could have used him (needed him)...is held up as an example for his teammates and all of us by being voted team MVP. I am really mad about this...I do NOT think that we are a rule-breaking or dishonorable program. But our leaders handled this whole thing like buffoons and need to go away...now.
Speaking of good kids, did Craig Krenzel ever go to Med School...I know he gave the NFL a whirl but if he was smart he banked most of that NFL min (400K) and won't have a boat load of student loans.
Terry, Believe it or not he is hawking cars for a local dealership?? He was an excellent student and caome from a family of medicine, which makes it even more unbelievable. Stu, I agree with you completely, but its water over the dam now.
Don I am very shocked, not that there is anything wrong with being in the Auto dealership business you can make a lot of money in that business if you are the GM or the Owner. But like you said it was always talked about him being a molecular genetics major wanting to go to Med School. I doubt if he had many dreams of playing in the NFL since I don't think he started at QB till his Sr. year did he? That he got to play a couple of years had to be a bonus.
Move on and put checks in place as best you can to keep this from happening again. Spurrier faced the same thing in his first year as Gator coach. Only the penalties were not announced until the season was almost over and took our first SEC Championship away, again. Ok I didn't mean to sound bitter, the real point is that from there Spurrier moved forward and put the Gators on the map to stay. Ohio State is in a much better positon than the Gators were at that time and I don't see any real problems down the road.
I would agree Bill, esp since they were able to bring in Urban Meyer. He will continue JT's tradition of locking up most if not all the top talent in Ohio and he'll probably be a bit better in getting talent from the SEC region to come North. If you have talent and coaching you will win a lot of games.
