I'm totally shocked at this developement. Unless he really didn't like coaching at UF and/or didn't get along with Muschamp I can't imagine why he would take the KU job. It's not a good job, even though Mangino had a decent run I can't see it being a good move for him. Not to mention that his whole motivation for taking the UF job was to be able to work with his son and help him up the coaching ranks. I wonder if Charlie Jr will remain at UF or will he transfer to Kansas? Not to mention I wonder about Charlies physical ability to handle the HC position.
I come to a realization on two different subjects that although are not connected, seem to have a remote connection. Ever since I started my China travels, I have been amazed at the way people drive over here. I now think that I have figured out the missing information that solves this puzzle. It must be a fact that no matter what your actions, if someone hits you behind the driver's door, they are at fault. Also, it must be illegal to stay within the same lane for more than 50 meters. Now, maybe this last fact on China driving could have a link to NCAA coaching. It must be illegal for a coach to work out his contract. Yeah... that must be it. When are athletic directors going to get together and make it so difficult for this to happen that coaches feel the need to honor their commitment?
I just heard this and am dumbfounded. He left the NFL to come to Florida because of his son who is a student there. He buys a Horse farm in Ocala because of his daughter and gave every indication that he had no more need to be a head coach. Now he is gone. Some day I may understand. But good luck Charlie.
I must be alone in this but I told a good gator friend of mine that Charley would not be there but one year. I have always had the feeling that this was just a stepping stone for him until something else worked into place. He is just too high profile to sit on the sideline as an OC, I can't explain it but this is exactly as I predicted it would happen.
Weis is on a reverse career path. Within three years he should be coaching high school football again.

Ralph, I couldn't resist that comment. Always appreciate your sense of humor. I must admit I was shocked that Charlie would leave so soon. Gator nation has to be shell shocked as well. Now if I can figure out exactly how this will influence our game with Florida, in the Gator Bowl, I will be happy. Could go either way, but it certainly can not hurt us.
The last game for UF was one of the worst offensive performances I have seen yet by the Gators in a season full of those performances. Chollie figured he should try to get out town with his rep still intact. We could be worse vs. OSU but I really don't see how.....
Come on home Kerwin Bell: http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20111208/ARTICLES/111209588/1090/gatorsfootball?Title=Kerwin-Bell-would-love-UF-return I am joined by many Gator fans who would love to see this former Gator get selected as the new OC.
I saw a Gator article on some of your offensive recruits like Aghlor and Taylor who are a little shaky now that Chollie is not the OCoord. As far as Bell goes, his resume' is pretty thin beyond being a former Gator...but then so was Gus Malazhan at Auburn and he's worked out pretty well.
Weis <t>I agree with everyone who finds Weis to KU as strange. Doesn't make any sense at all to me. Is the guy just a glutten for punishment or what?</t>
Tom, re China driving. Those Chinese are fairly civilized. During our stay in Iran, we learned that in a collision with an Iranian driver and anyone else, the Iranian would win on the premise that had the other not been there the accicent wouldn't have happened. . Also at a one way sign, you had to look both ways for some one doing 30 in reverse. On our arrival they loaded our luggage on the back of a pick-up. The guy took off with the luggage flying all over. This was at night and he drove with lights off. They love to do this. I have to add that my driver was just as crazy. I had to disabuse him of slamming on his brakes just short of hitting a pedestrian. He thought this was great fun. Also we had to learn that noone crosses at an intersection, just in the middle of the street where you only had to watch traffic in two directions instead of four. Had to catch the eye of the driver. En Shalah
The only concern I have about Bell is that he could be so popular with Gator fans that it could be distracting to Muschamp. I am a believer in Muschamp and want him to succeed, if Bell could fit in and help do that then I think it would be a great move. Bottom line is that Muschamp should pick the person he wants. I personally hope that is Bell but will be behind whoever he picks.
Some interesting comments from Weis.. He never had that at ND, esp on defense. The team he left Kelly was soft both physically and mentally. He made similar comments at his presser taking the ND job, about how he wanted to coach at ND through Charlie Jr's graduation from ND. Jr. was always on the sideline eventually even wearing a headset. This sounds a lot like Jr. is the coach in waiting at KU. Weis
Charlie already hired Ron Powlus as an asst, must be either the QB coach, reportedly will hire Bernie Parmlee (from his ND staff) and Rob Ianello (also from his ND staff) and Tim Grunhard who is a former AA OL at ND in the 90's.
8) When you hire TWO defensive coordinators, then walk away from them and let them fight it out among themselves as he did at Notre Dame...there are bound to be a few small problems... I don't think Charlie is a head coach. I also have serious doubts about his abilities as a college coach, where teaching and instructing are such a huge part of the job. I wish him well. Let's see if he's learned anything...
I agree that Weis failed as a head coach. In the pros he got the finished product, he did not have to teach or develop.
