And so it begins. The nightmare scenario for Michigan fans is beginning to take shape. I have fully expected Meyer to take full advantage of PSU's weak recruiting position and now not only will OSU get all of their usual top talent in that region but they will mop up on what talent PSU might have landed also. Sure...one or two may slip Michigan's way but I expect Meyer to get most of them.
This kids a top recruit. We just said, "sorry your position is filled?" Aren't we just filled with talent. :?
Beginning? Really? Have you been under a rock for the last decade? We can only dream that our new coach even begins to approach the results our old coach had -v- our friends up north.....nobody before him had for a period spanning over a hundred years......let's not over do it
Sid, that is an interesting concept though one that has to be foreign to many programs.......the kid may have been able to help you
Meyer has proven himself as a great coach time after time with much success and has a proven track record. But he also has a track record of saying one thing and doing just the opposite with a proven track record in that arena. If my son was thinking of going to a Meyer coached team I would be more than suspicious on what he was telling us his intentions are.
True...I should have said regenerating. Just when UM fans thought it was safe to go in the water again here comes a hungry Great White.
Meyer didn't invent "poaching" of others recruits but he certainly refined it and made it a popular method of recruiting. ND folks were stung several times by Meyers recruiting tactics that were completely legal by the rules but fans of other schools considered underhanded and unethical. But as time has gone by most schools, including the Irish, now poach players whenever they can. It's like NASCAR it you are cheating you aren't trying...while in this case it's not cheating of course. I remember reading that Meyer felt that he was happy when a player he wanted gave his verbal to another school, it narrowed the competition down to him vs the school he verbaled to and it was easier that way. As I said it's all legal. I would expect that now that he's back at OSU he will poach a number of players from other teams.
I agree that many coaches do it and I don't see the foul play here. That's why they have a signing day. Sorta like being in the bar and the girl says she has a boyfriend.....but a couple 2 or 3 shots later......what boyfriend? 8)
It didn't used to be that common...but it is now. Irish are currently trying to flip a WR who's been committed to Neb since May, a DB who has been committed longer to Va.Tech, and a few others that I can't remember. On the other foot we have a several players who are taking visits and making ND fans nervous that they will flip the other way. We have a top 100 Fr OL who we lost out to FSU and he even enrolled early and then decided he didn't like FSU and quit. We took him at ND. That would have been unlikely to happen in the past. So it's wide open out there...as I said Urban didn't invent it but he made it an art.
Let me clarify something I said about the Tommy Schutt article. The words "at his position" were mine. At the time, I wasn't thinking about how those words affected the perception about what happened. To correct my earlier comment and to be consistent with exactly what was said in the article: ND rescinded the offer because its class was full. The article made no mention that the class was full at his position.
Sid you really were right, when Sheldon Day committed, that made two DL's in the class along with Jarron Jones already committed and the Irish no longer had an opening for him. He played a waiting game and lost, he also lost out on his offer from Michigan as they took somebody else rather than wait for him. I can't say for sure but I think OSU maybe did not offer under Tressel so when he got the PSU offer he jumped on it.
Thanks, Terry. I guess if I paid more attention to recruiting news, I would have known that. It sounds like he's a good catch for OSU, as he had been for PSU, so in the end he wasn't hurt by waiting.
