Lots to talk about with what happened over the weekend. 1. LSU, Alabama and Ark all won and solidified the SEC stranglehold on the BCS. I don't think this is a good thing. 2. Oregon lost, I was shocked at that. But while they are an exciting football team, they are a small team and USC has big guys who are just as fast. They also have a QB who can throw the ball and doesn't require trickery to make things happen. I was sort of hoping that Oregon was the real deal and that they would win out and we'd have them in the BCS game. But they screwed the pooch. I am also disappointed in the fact that I am slowly coming to grips with the fact that maybe that asshole Kiffin is a decent coach. 3. Texas lost, while I don't want to go all MCG but I think this might have been one of the worst officiated games I've seen in awhile, we were called for a kick interference on a recovery of a fumbled punt that gave the ball back to KSU. It was a ******** call to say the least. But we shot ourselves in the foot enough in other ways to make up for it. Our QB's were awful and I'm starting to think Byron Harsin just is out of his league as a play caller. With 2:39 left in the game and Texas at the 50 there is plenty of time to mix in the running game with some short passes but nooooooooooo we go 4 and out with Case McCoy making Tommy Rees look like John Elway. And I will throw in that on the way to work this AM one of the Houston Radio Stations is reporting that Texas has contacted Nick Saban and offered him a 10 year/100M contract to coach the Longhorns and that he's going to do it. His wife supposedly wants out of Tuscaloosa. What's worse is that I think our Defense is playing as well as any defense in the b12, we have a championship defense. I think there is a good chance we don't win another game (A&M and Baylor) and finish 6-6. What's worse is that for 2012 we still won't have a QB, unless there is major improvement over the off season. 4. Only thing that made the weekend tolearable from a B12 standpoint was the OU went to Baylor and got beat!!! OU Sucks...but on the other hand that probably means RGIII and his Baylor buddies will beat us as well. 5. Clemson...kudos to Kes for never believing that Clemson was for real. I mean they just looked like world beaters there for awhile then they look like crap vs a very avg NCState team. But this seems to happen to Clemson a lot, fast starts followed by crashes. 6. I have this dejavu feeling about the SEC West, Ark will beat LSU leaving a 3 way tie amongst with all having 1 loss...has this every happened before? Which team gets screwed? 7. In looking at Tom's posts on our pick'em contest I hadn't realized how dominant Tom has been recently in the contest. I wonder if all his new toys are the result of him taking this prowess to Vegas where money is given instead of bobbleheads!!
On #3: That's why I haven't had much to say about the offciating this year as it relates to UF. I could have had a few things to say about the Georgia game but when your Dbs allow TWO long 4th down TD completions and you lose by 4 what difference would complaining about a couple of calls make?
How about this for a senario.... Ark beats LSU. 3 way tie for SEC West. Ark ascends to #1 in the BCS poll due to beating LSU, Bama is #2 and LSU drops to #3. OK lets say that Ark after all the tie breaker rules are applied is the SEC West rep to the SECCG. They promptly lose to UGA. BCS elevates Alabama to #1 and LSU to #2. We then have 2 team who didn't win their conference play for the Nat'l Title. Also UGA will go to a BCS bowl so that they get 3 teams in the BCS Bowls. Big $$$ flows into the SEC.
I watched Georgia struggle on offense with a very poor Kentucky team. Beating LSU is out of the question and the Dawgs beating Arkansas would be a long shot at best.
1) I don't think Arkansas is the 3rd best team in the land, but that will probably take care of itself. 2) I wasn't shocked that they lost... but hate who they lost to. 3) Wow... I watched most of the 4th quarter and that was painful. Neither team had an offense, but KSU admits it. That last series for the horns was awful. No one seemed to have a clue what was going on. Don't worry, the Aggie defense has a way of making QB's into heisman candidates, so I'm sure your boys will be world-beaters on T-day. 4) I knew you'd get a kick out of Bob calling that timeout, and then losing because of it! 5) Same old Clemson, it just took longer for their spots to show. 6) That would be funny... but I doubt it. LSU will smother Ark's offense.
Rumors getting stronger that Urban Meyer will be the next Ohio State coach....Bruce Feldman supposedly said on the Dan Patrick show this AM that it's a done deal and Urban is forming his staff.
His health got better and his wife then quit pampering his ass and his teenaged kids don't want him hanging over their shoulder so he copped a 'tude and decided to go back to coaching. 8)
1) I can't believe the other conference presidents wouldn't put a stop to this. It would be one thing if, in a playoff, two of those were the last two standing, but in this system it is simply not right. 2) I think this had as much to do with coming down from the Stanford win, and believing their press clippings that they deserved a shot at the title, as it did with how good USC is (which is still pretty good). 3) hehe 4) Big Game Bob indeed. 5) I was wrong about Georgia Tech, though. I would have my eyes on Clemson the next two years. 6) Scenario - There is a rule that only two representatives from a conference can go to BCS bowls. The question is, which would take precedence, the one that says #1 vs. #2, or the tie-in that says the SEC champion goes to the Sugar Bowl. I'm guessing Georgia would be the one left out, which then allows the Sugar Bowl to cherry-pick whatever matchup they want (can you say Stanford vs. PSU?). 8) Coug's bowl hopes are dashed this weekend in OT.
I read today that if there is a three way tie for the West there are 7 rules to break the tie and this one would come down the that rule. Which is using the BCS, the losest team ranked in the BCS would be eliminated and the winner of the game between the other two would in in the SEC Championship game. The way I see it that would favor Bama. I think that if Arkansas beats LSU then LSU would drop below the other two and Bama would have beaten Arkansas. How about this for a scenario, Arkansas beats LSU but Georgia upsets Bama. Then Arkansas and LSU square off again for the Championship. Neither team would have won their conference Championship. However I see very little chance for Georgia to beat any of the three. I might add this disclaimer though, in 2001 when Tennessee upset Florida to knock us out of the East it seemed like Tennessee was headed to the Championship game that year with Miami. However a LSU team, led by Saban, upset Tennessee. I was always convinced that Tennessee spend a lot of their emotion to beat the Gators and had trouble getting to that level one week later.
I still don't like Kiffin. Coaching rumors, Meyer to Ohio State. I don't know if it happens, but I have always said that Meyer needs to be careful about his health. It's not easy to change yourself, especially in one year. If he goes I wish him luck but would be concerned about his long term welfare. Saban to Texas, what do you hear about that one Terry? I think I would be shocked but stranger things have happened.
Just the proceeds of both of us working for great companies that recognize effort and results.
Terry, I'll be stunned if Grey plays. A hairline fracture of the clavicle on a RB is just asking for a major break. That will hurt us... not so much in the running game, as in pass protection. The two young pups can run with the rock, but are not ready for picking up blitzes...
