Kelly supposedly said this regarding the uniforms for the Maryland Game...

I'm pretty sure he was thinking of Krebs when he said it though! :)

Must we spend so much time posting about trivial matters like uniforms. Let's discuss important stuff like .....I dunno......Jumbotrons?

Back to the game. MD has not been good this year, so even with injuries I expect we'll be ok. We will definitely miss Cave at center even though Golic did a good job filling in for him I actually don't think we will miss Theo, he's really not that productive as a receiver. Aaron Lynch if he's not 100% will be missed big time though. At the start of the year we were pretty deep with good experience on the DL, now we are pretty thin and inexperienced.

Robby Toma next man in behind Theo? Who's next in after Lynch?

You're going to hate it. FedEx Field is the worst stadium in North America. I attended two Redskins games and one Springsteen concert and have taken a vow that I will never return. One hour to get there, four hours to get home.

As for the game, this should be an easy Irish victory. I've never seen a coach destroy a program faster than Randy Edsall has destroyed Maryland. He took over a team that went 9-4, had 14 returning starters, was expected to challenge for a BCS berth, and turned them into a Div II team. He benched his QB, the 2010 ACC Rookie of the Year, then reinstated him, benched him again, and reinstated him. He took All-ACC FS Kenny Tate and converted him to OLB. Tate got promptly injured and is out for the year. This ensures that ND will face no one on this team that has any chance of playing on Sundays.

There are strong rumblings here that Edsall has lost the team. His heavy handed tactics (i.e. no do-rags, no hats indoors, no on allowed to speak to the press other than himself) were not received well, and he publicly insulted the previous coach, beloved alum Ralph Friedgen (the 2010 ACC Coach of the Year) which brought the wrath off the alumni. To top it all off he recently had this to say about the state of Maryland football:

“When you’re installing a program, there’s more than just wins and losses,” Edsall said. " .... we are winning in a lot of areas. We are just not winning on the field right now." When asked where they were winning he refused to elaborate. No further evidence of his incompetence is needed.

Edsall initially was rumored as one of the candidates to replace Weis. Sure dodged a bullet there.

I guess the only thing that bothers me is that he beat us while at Connecticut. Of course, that was a different coach and a different ND team.

We should win of that I have no doubt. But we usually get the opponents best game and if the Terps have one left in them tomorrow they will play it... I would like it to be like the Air Force game where we score the first 6 times we touch the ball, get to play a lot of back ups including Andrew Hendrix a lot in the 3rd and 4th qtr and come away with a comfortable win and no new injuries!!

This game is a gambler's nightmare. I think the spread is 24 which is insane.

    Jim,

It's a home game for ND and is being telecast nationally on NBC. You should be able to see it.

Yeah I am thinking JOCO didn't realize this is part of that Shamrock series in which we play a home game on the road/at a neutral site..

I forgot about that as well.

Solid 1st half, both Wood and Gray having excellent games. Tommy is Tommy, makes some throws and doesn't make some other ones. I hope we can score enough in the 3rd period to get Hendrix in the game.

I know Te'o is not 100% and it shows, he's really not playing like a future 1st round draft choice.

Actually, I wasn't thinking at all and I made a classic mistake. After years of telling everyone, including my students, not to believe anything that they read in the LA Times...I believed what I read in the LA Times. Their Friday sports section includes a TV guide for Saturday's games and it did not include Notre Dame.

    -Tommy Rees
We have three better QBs and we're recruiting a fourth one. He doesn't read the defenses correctly most of the time and Irish opponents are taking advantage of the fact that he can't run, which is a large part of this offense. There I said it again.

    -Golic Jr.
Wow. I had no idea he was this good. A center who gets into the second level to roadgrade LBs? Wowza. Where has he been? How many more on the bench like him?

    -Jonas and Cierre
Two very good, smart, older running backs who do slightly different things. A good pair.

    -Robby Toma
Looks better than Theo Riddick. Keep him out there!

    -Punt returns
(sigh) Can we NOT put Michael Floyd out there and get him hurt? Please? Neither Floyd or Goodman are punt returners.

    -Zach Martin
really knocks people around when he doesn't have to pass block...

    -Tuitt, Lynch and Houndshell...
the frosh beastie boys are a load when the other team has to pass...

    -Carlo...
is better than Fox in most situations. Am I repeating myself?

    -Austin Collinsworth
Is my favorite player. His playing time increases every week and it's getting harder and harder for the coaches to keep him off the field. He's an old-fashioned headknocker who rides to the sound of the guns.

    -Teo
Is hurt. He should be on the bench in these games until he's healed. There's no need to play him now...or Lynch for that matter.

    -White shoes
I guess they matched the rest of the powderpuff uniforms the team was forced to wear. Now toss them on the scrap pile of history where they belong...

I don't see any way we land a top flight QB in this next class. We might, but I doubt it. The one thing that may save us is the turmoil in the Big1G.

For all you self-appointed "expert" QB analysts:
Whoops! I forgot. 2 INTs. Also, he is not a threat to run. Yes, someday we will have a dual threat QB on the field. Is that sufficient reason to bash Rees' performance to date? I think not.

The criticism here reminds me of my son's father-in-law, who states all of his opinions so assertively that he's conviced himself he knows what he's talking about.

Are you talking about the 2012 class? Because I think we have a very good shot at landing Gunner Kiel and while a lot of people say this years QB class is good not great, he's still one of the top 5 QB's in the class of 2012. Not to mention he has to be looking at the way the offense is developing with just an average QB in Tommy Rees and think he could do much better than Rees. I doubt he fears Hendrix or Golson in terms of the depth chart.

As far as the game goes.

Actually, I wasn't thinking at all and I made a classic mistake. Their Friday sports section includes a TV guide for Saturday's games and it did not include Notre Dame.

LOL...your student's read a newspaper? I didn't think anyone under the age of 40 reads a newspaper anymore.

    -Tommy Rees
We have three better QBs and we're recruiting a fourth one. He doesn't read the defenses correctly most of the time and Irish opponents are taking advantage of the fact that he can't run, which is a large part of this offense. There I said it again.

I was listening to Kelly talk about Rees being able to handle more tempo, and that they are working with him on being able to throw more vertical. He's really all in with Tommy. He's always had productive QB's so while like most of us I wonder why Hendrix didn't get more snaps vs MD, but I am assuming that Kelly feels he has to keep working with Tommy that it gives him the best chance to win now. He doesn't have the luxury of taking lumps with Hendrix this year. I also think that he kept Tommy in the game last night to run up the score to impress the pollsters. I think he felt like he had to have big stats and a score in the 40's if he wanted to creep into the top 25.

    -Golic Jr.
Wow. I had no idea he was this good. A center who gets into the second level to roadgrade LBs? Wowza. Where has he been? How many more on the bench like him?

This really helps with OL depth going forward and his mom has stopped tweeting what an arsehole Kelly is! :) There was a time that many thought that no way that Golic deserved a 5th year. He's made his case!

    -Jonas and Cierre
Two very good, smart, older running backs who do slightly different things. A good pair.

I have seen two backs that are as good, but they play for the Texans...Ariane Foster and Ben Tate. Texas A&M had 2 but one is out now, Texas had two and both of them are gone now. It's nice to have two like Gray and Wood, I hope they finish strong and healthy.

    -Robby Toma
Looks better than Theo Riddick. Keep him out there!

Riddick has been a disappointment, some are saying he needs to go back to RB, but it seems to me that he's not physical enough to survive at RB in our offense. Theo has lots of talent and speed but I have to wonder about his work ethic.

    -Punt returns
(sigh) Can we NOT put Michael Floyd out there and get him hurt? Please? Neither Floyd or Goodman are punt returners.

Kelly seems determined to not do anything about this till Spring Drills and has said so a number of times.

    -Zach Martin
really knocks people around when he doesn't have to pass block...

OL very pleasant surprise, the sacks they gave up yesterday were on Tommy Rees holding the ball too long and Jonas missing a blitz pickup.

    -Tuitt, Lynch and Houndshell...
the frosh beastie boys are a load when the other team has to pass...

Those guys are good, and don't forget Nikklas and Ishaq who haven't played as much as those guys but hopefully will develope as well as the freshmen DL's have.

    -Carlo...
is better than Fox in most situations. Am I repeating myself?

Don't agree here, both Carlo and Fox are pretty average college LB's, hopefully they will get better. They both hurt us in different ways. I don't question their heart but I don't see even all-conference for Carlo even if we were in a conference.

    -Austin Collinsworth
Is my favorite player. His playing time increases every week and it's getting harder and harder for the coaches to keep him off the field. He's an old-fashioned headknocker who rides to the sound of the guns.

I like this kid a lot, I wish he hadn't spent last year at WR and had been moved to defense right away. I don't know what his upside is but I know he'll be the best player he can be, just hope it's good enough.

    -Teo
Is hurt. He should be on the bench in these games until he's healed. There's no need to play him now...or Lynch for that matter.

Te'o just hasn't been impressive lately, none of the LB's have in pass coverage. I thought this group would be a strength but while they are not terrible they are not a strenght.

    -White shoes
I guess they matched the rest of the powderpuff uniforms the team was forced to wear. Now toss them on the scrap pile of history where they belong...

Uniforms, I liked them actually not as regular gear but for a one of game like the "Shamrock Series" they were great. It was pretty impressive watching the video of how they were made and while I don't follow NASCAR or Formula 1, or Indycar and all those other motorsports apparently the guy who designed the helmets and made them (hand made them, took 4 hours per helmet) is like the #1 helmet designer in the world. So in the overall scheme of things if the kids liked them then I'm ok. I love our new regular helmets!

I was at the game and watched several players very closely including those mentioned above.

Tommy Rees: Ball handling skills have improved tremendously but there are two things he couldn't do at gunpoint. Run the ball or throw an accurate deep ball. Those are facts. Maryland did not shadow him at all there were time an entire side of the field was open and he never thought of running. That takes one third of the options out of Kelly's offense.

Golic is a beast. he is better right now than Cave on his best day.

Toma deserves to stay out there. He plays hard and runs very precise routes.

We have no punt returns and there is no need to discuss that any further this season.

    Collinsworth is the real deal.

Teo did not have his name called once last night. He is hurt and unhappy.

Carlo is ten times the LB that Fox is. If you know what a linebacker is supposed to do you see that. Carlo gets more contact in series than Fox gets in a game. Fox is playing because of his athleticism and pass defense.... Through ten games he has not broken up a pass, not touched a ball. Kelly needs to make a decision... neither player can get any rhythm with this constant shuffling.
