Starting a new topic. Sporting News reports that the New York Times reports that he may be on his way out:

    Paterno May Be Out Soon

Jif, Exactly what I was thinking. His whole life has been Penn State football and think you are right on track.

No doubt Joe, in his career, has done a lot of things the right way maybe more than most of his peers...but he didn't do the right thing here, he washed his hands of it. He may have no legal liability but he failed the moral test.

He arrived at Penn state in 1949 when his coach at Brown ( Rip Engle) left Brown for Penn state..over 60 years!

Started another topic....didn't see this one.

But yes....so very sad as BT says on so many levels.

I too see JoePa not surving this physically.

MCG's post from the other topic, I'm going to delete it and we'll talk about this here.

Been putting off commenting on this as I am sure we all have because it's just a downer....from all aspects.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/09/sports/ncaafootball/penn-state-said-to-be-planning-paternos-exit.html?_r=3&src=tp

A downer because of the inglorious and soon to be exit of one of the greatest coaches in sports history and more importantly a downer because of the nature of the crimes and the innocent victims that were abused.

Joe Pa could hardly have done anything more wrong than not do whatever possible to get to the bottom of the allegations against Sandusky and bring the scum to justice in a timely way before any more victims were abused.

It is a stunner and as I say such an unexpected downer for anyone who has respected Paterno for his stamina, determination and coaching acumen.

PSU cancelled Paterno's press conference today. I would not be shocked if he has been fired already.

He's a goner in more ways than one.

Too bad for JoePa and so much more than that for the victims so you cannot feel too sorry for JoePa. Unbelievable events in Happy Valley.

Speaking of the Penn St. president, this is his only announcement to date about the incident.
His ass should be out the door before Paterno's. Honesty? Intergity? COMPASSION??? They sat on a report of the vilest conduct in order to protect the sacred god of the university the football program. A number of other children were assaulted after they had knowledge of Sandusky's crimes and yet they did nothing hoping it would go away.
I think one of the requirements for hiring an AD these days is an x-ray to confirm that they have a spine and an EKG to find out if they have a heart.
I'll be stunned if Spanier survives the year.[/code]

    Agreed Gipper.

I have three sons of my own and I can hardly stomach reading about this.

I can't imagine anyone connected to the university not pursuing legal apprehension and/or investigation immediately upon hearing of such a heinous report from McQuade.

Here's the thing.. those staffs are close. (stick with me on this) There is no way you have a guy on staff that long and you NOT consider him a good friend.

If some snot nose former player/GA type came to me with that kind of accusation, regardless of how limited or vague it may have been, regarding my good friend of the last 20 years... Then I'm coming out swinging until it's resolved. I personally would want either my friend out of my life or that GA gone, but I'd want to get to the bottom of it. Either way, there'd be a 'come to Jesus' on this that I wouldn't let out of my hands until I personally knew the truth..

That's what I can't reconcile here. Joe Pa is a legend etc etc. Those things can't be denied.. but to have some one you've known be a part of your family for so long and then to have someone come along and make an accusation or report such as this... how the hell don't your doors come off and you go into hyperdrive? How in the world do you just pass this off?

It's not like the guy was reporting some secondary recruiting violation for goodness sake. Right now, in perhaps his biggest test as a leader and human being, Joe Pa just shuffled it off.. according to the official documents.

Considering the, now proven, wall of silence surrounding JoePa I am willing to put on hold everything until this is all hashed out. His legacy, his 'doing it the right way' his everything.. because until this gets measured, it's all suspect.

And right now, it's all suspect.

Penn State is apparently going to let him finish the season! They must be out of their collective minds.

Penn State fans/students rallied last night outside his home to show their support for him. To outsiders like us it would seem like they need to relieve him of coaching duties and he shouldn't be on the sidelines or in the booth on Sat vs Neb.

If they let him retire as he supposedly is going to announce this afternoon, and coach the rest of the season. It will make every game a circus for the players. There are more victims coming forward now, up from the original 8 to something like 17 now and it's doubtful that is the end of it.

I watched Matt Millen last night and he couldn't bring himself to say the words that Joe failed those kids and that he should be fired. He was disgusted of course by the whole situation, but just couldn't find the courage to say Joe should've done more.
