Quinn a super-star, Smith at OSU ditto.....as is the true #3 Russell of LSU.....the only miscue is Chris Leak...he is no # 6, he can't stay in pocket, can't see ahead and can only throw to his right in motion.

Kyle Wright of Miami will rise to the very top this season or next...he is that good.

    The Gonz

    Rivals.com 2006 Preseason Top Quarterbacks

    1. Brady Quinn, Notre Dame, Sr., 6-4, 231

Quinn already owns almost every major Notre Dame single-season and career passing record as he prepares to begin his fourth year as a starter. The Heisman Trophy candidate completed nearly 65 percent of his passes for 3,919 yards and 32 touchdowns last year in one of the greatest seasons ever for a Notre Dame quarterback. He is the likely top pick in next year's NFL Draft.

    2. Troy Smith, Ohio State, Sr., 6-1, 215

Smith's Buckeyes defeated Quinn's Fighting Irish in last year's Fiesta Bowl, and these two quarterbacks could spend this fall dueling for the Heisman Trophy. Smith provided 2,893 yards in total offense, threw for 16 touchdowns and ran for 11 more last year even though he didn't open the season as the starter. This dual threat rushed for 611 yards in 2005 while also leading the Big Ten in passing efficiency.

    3. Chad Henne, Michigan, Jr., 6-2, 226

How talented is this guy? He threw for 2,526 yards with 23 touchdowns and only eight interceptions last fall in what was generally considered a down year. The third-year starter already ranks third in school history in career pass attempts (781) and completions (463). He reached the 5,000-yard career plateau faster than any previous Wolverine quarterback.

    4. Drew Stanton, Michigan State, Sr., 6-3, 222

Perhaps no quarterback means more to his team than Stanton does to the Spartans. His blistering start last year helped Michigan State win its first four games. The Spartans then collapsed down the stretch while Stanton played with an injured throwing hand. He still rushed for 338 yards while completing two-thirds of his passes. Stanton threw for 3,077 yards and 22 touchdowns.

    5. Brian Brohm, Louisville, Jr., 6-4, 224

Louisville's hopes of winning the Big East could depend on how well Brohm recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. When Brohm is healthy, Louisville can move the ball as well as anyone in the country. The reigning Big East player of the year reached the 300-yard mark five times last season, ranked second in the nation in passing efficiency and threw 19 touchdown passes with only five interceptions.

    6. Chris Leak, Florida, Sr., 6-0, 207

Florida's late-season surge last year coincided with Leak's adjustment to the spread offense installed by Gators coach Urban Meyer. Leak completed 68 percent of his passes for 10 touchdowns with only two interceptions in Florida's last five games of the season. Leak's relative lack of speed makes him less than an ideal fit for Meyer's offense, but the fourth-year starter provides the Gators with plenty of experience and throwing ability.

    7. Brandon Cox, Auburn, Jr., 6-2, 201

Cox improved as much as any quarterback in the nation over the course of last season. He began his first year as a starter by throwing four interceptions in an upset loss to Georgia Tech. He ended the regular season by directing the Tigers to back-to-back victories over Georgia and Alabama. After the Georgia Tech game, Cox was picked off only four times the rest of the season.

    8. Sam Keller, Arizona State, Sr., 6-4, 230

Keller could become the best quarterback in the Pac-10 as long as he can prove he's the best quarterback on his team. He threw for 2,165 yards and 20 touchdowns last year before breaking his thumb. In his absence, Rudy Carpenter filled in and led the nation in passing efficiency. Keller enters the season as Arizona State's No. 1 quarterback, but he can't afford a slow start.

    9. Pat White, West Virginia, So., 6-2, 190

Any tailback from a BCS conference who gained 508 yards in his last three regular-season games would enter the following year as an All-America candidate. White posted those statistics – as a quarterback. White is such a dangerous runner that he averaged 12.7 yards per carry his last three regular-season games. He also is an adequate passer. White, who didn't start until midway through the season, completed 58 percent of his attempts a year ago for eight touchdowns with five interceptions.

    10. JaMarcus Russell, LSU, Jr., 6-5, 248

The Comeback Kid directed the Tigers to six fourth-quarter or overtime victories in the last two years. Russell's outstanding arm strength causes him to make the occasional ill-advised pass, but it also has produced plenty of big plays. He now must overcome a challenge from teammate Matt Flynn, who directed the Tigers to a Peach Bowl rout of Miami after Russell sat out the game with an injured left shoulder and right wrist.

    Best of the Rest

    11. Trent Edwards, Stanford, Sr., 6-4, 220

    12. Drew Tate, Iowa, Sr., 6-0, 192

    13. Tyler Palko, Pittsburgh, Sr., 6-2, 220

    14. Matt Flynn, Louisiana State, Jr., 6-2, 228

    15. Kyle Wright, Miami, Jr., 6-4, 220

    16. Rudy Carpenter, Arizona State, So., 6-2, 207

    17. Bret Meyer, Iowa State, Jr., 6-3, 208

    18. John Stocco, Wisconsin, Sr., 6-2, 204

    19. Drew Weatherford, Florida State, So., 6-3, 220

    20. Matt Ryan, Boston College, Jr., 6-5, 221

    21. John Beck, Brigham Young, Sr., 6-2, 212

    22. Willie Tuitama, Arizona, So., 6-3, 218

    23. Graham Harrell, Texas Tech, So., 6-3, 197

    24. Colton Brennan, Hawaii, Jr., 6-3, 190

    25. Luke Getsy, Akron, Sr., 6-2, 220

Reports from practice indicate he is better than he has ever been and is much more comfortable with Meyer's offensive gameplan.

Any improvement over those last 5 games would be phenomenal.

I have seen Leak play about 4 times already in person, not TV....and I can tell you against a penetrating defense he runs 90 percent of the time to his right and hurries his passes.....he is not a #6 top QB....he would not start for Miami.

I see Tebow takng the reins if Leak stumbles....a very likely scenario...and I like Deshawn at RB over the other choices....Wynn has great moves going north-south.....a little undersized so he gets beat up but he's got legs.

For Gator fans sake I hope Meyer tailors "his" offense to fit Leakes talents. If he does that then Leake could have a great year. If he insists on continuing to run the "option" portion of the spread option then Leake will have a very up and down Sr. Year. The Kid has talent and an accurate arm, but his skill set is just different than Alex Smith and Meyer has to realize that...

As far as not starting for Miami.....ha ha ha,,,that was a good one. It's the reverse Kyle wrong wouldn't start for many teams other than Miami.

Kyle Wright in his freshman year last season did more than Leak has done in his junior year and Kyle Wright was the #1 QB prospect in the nation when he committed to Miami.

Leak would not be in Miami's rotation......Like I said.......personally, I have seen Leak play in 4 games and he is not a top notch QB....even Gator loyalists know that.

Tebow is a great recruit for UF.....but Leak needs a lot of help to be half-good due to his limited skills.

Let's list some highlights of Leak's career thus far and then Gonz you list for me the great things Wright has done to compare:

    Leak:

As a TRUE FRESHMAN he led UF on the road vs. unbeaten LSU and pulled off a mistake free 19-7 win over eventual national champion LSU that would be the Tigers' only loss that season.

Has beaten Georgia in 2 out of three seasons and probably could have been 3-0 except for the firing of Zook early in the same week of a 31-24 loss. In the 16-13 win his freshman season he led the Gators on a masterful 70 yard drive for a very late FG to win the game.

Has beaten FSU in 2 out of 3 seasons including UF's only road win in the series in 20 years. Leak would be 3-0 vs. FSU except for the men in stripes. UF scored 34 points on offense that day in a 38-34 loss....nothing he could personally do about it and in fact he led UF to what should have been a gamewinning drive with less than 2 minutes remaining in spite of all the foul play from the refs. UF took the lead on that drive and Leak never saw the ball again.

Likewise for the men in stripes vs. Tenn. in a game in which UF scored 28 points in K-ville only to see a screwed up ref give Tenn a chance to kick a miracle winning FG on the last play. Leak does not play defense either.
In essence Leak is 2-0 vs. Tenn performance-wise because in his freshman season it was Ingle Martin that played 3 quarters of the ball game for a sluggish Gator offense.

Only Danny Weurffel has had the kind of success at QB for Florida that Chris Leak has had vs. top flight competition and some of UF's fiercest rivals. Danny wasn't hamstrung by the poor in game coaching of Ron Zook or by a coaching change before his junior season as Leak was.

Leak is amazing in my book to have done what he has done at Florida.

Dang, tell me why I'm not surprised that Gonzo says the Florida QB doesn't belong.

    True to form Gonzo.

Without trying to start a war, I think that there are several QBs in that Top 10 who should be in the 11-20 range, while the following QBs belong in the Top 10 somewhere:

    Trent Edwards- Stanford
    Drew Tate- Iowa
    Tyler Palko- Pitt
    Kyle Wright- Miami
    Rudy Carpenter- Arizona State
    John Beck- BYU
    Graham Harrell- Texas Tech
    Colt Brennan- Hawaii

    ...................IMHO...JO'Co

To correct you: Kyle Wright was not a freshman last season, he was a Soph. And Chris Leak was the #1 QB that year not kyle wright.

    Swamp...always giving you the facts

Other than a great game against Wake Forest and a habit of being in the dirt, kyle hasnt shown much. Dont get me wrong though, he has the potential to be a great quarterback

Drew Tate 12th? This is the guy who lead Iowa to a share of the B10 championship in 05 and a great bowl win against LSU, when Iowa, due to injuries, was playing with its 5th string running back.

Bobda you are thinking of 2004, Drew had a great year that year and tapered off last year when Iowa finished 5-3 in the B10 and 7-5 overall. If you remember their bowl "loss" was a contentious one vs the Gators.

He's from around here, Baytown Texas.

I always think that it is a time for celebration when Zo comes out of Winter home ready to talk football and do toe-to-toe with the Irish mafia. It is like seeing the first Robin in Spring.

Yeah, especially the Loss to Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl when they could score and the 40-3 loss to LSU where the offense was held to negative yardage in the 2nd half.

You keep Wright, we'll keep Leak and both be happy.

    Typical spin Gonzo.

The Kyle Wright mutual admiration society seems to have conviened and decided he's one of the top 10 QB's in the country and Leak just doesn't deserve so I decided to see if last years numbers could justify those opinions, here they are.

    Compl % Yards TD's INT

    Kyle Wright, 58.6 2403 18 10

    Chris Leak 62.8 2639 20 6

Yes I gues it is obvious that Wright is the better QB.

Oh Gonzo, I watched Wright in 3 games last year, FSU, Ga Tech and LSU.

I forgot the remarkable offensive numbers in those three games, but I think that Miami scored all of 1 - 2 touchdowns total in those three games, the last one being a 40-3 drubbing by LSU.

Any half-baked football fan who knows the game would inmediately realize that Chris Leak plays in a pass-happy offense while Kyle Wright, the best QB-Parade All American and # 1 recruit in the nation.......plays in a run-happy offense.

I wouldn't expect such a half-baked fan with knowledge to make that fact known on this board.

    'cept for JocoMeister....he knows

    Huh????

I believe you are thinking of the Spurrier era but also think you have described yourself as a half-baked fan.

Every time you open your mouth, er make that keyboard, you make yourself look more foolish.

Florida was so far down the list of team passing they may not make the top 50.

    Geez Gonzo you are slipping.

    8) Hey, I hope the Gators do something worthwhile this season since they have flopped so badly the last six......you got nothing to show for a long time.

6-0 .....5 NCs...and on and on....imagine if UF even had half our record how you Gators would be bloating.....you got one measly NC and you would think that college football's epicenter is in boring Gainesville.

    Que horror!!!
