8) We're looking ahead. I hope the players aren't doing that. Air Force is good enough to beat anyone on a given day...
I agree we are not good enough to look ahead, USAFA needs our full attention our best effort....next 2 weeks we can look ahead to USC not this week!
BTW Kelly alluded that he's getting close to putting either Golson or Hendrix in a game with their "special package". I hope we can get off to a fast start and be in control in the 3rd Qtr so he can do it.
I watched the video of the pep rally on the und.com site and Jonas Gray was named the gameday captain and gave a hell of a speech...he fired me up!! The kid has a lot of personality!
Scored every time we had the ball in the first half. 42-16 Air Force offense has looked good we have given up almost 300yds
Man, y'all got a generous call on that first TD. It really looked like his foot came down out of bounds.
Yeah but he still has to have a foot down inbounds, I don't think this is like diving over from the one yard line. He caught the ball and never came down inbounds. At least that is how I saw it, obviously the replay officials did not agree.
ND <r>Looks like JO'Co may be right about the Hendrix kid. Adds another element to the offense that Rees isn't gonna give us. <E>8)</E></r>
 Tim I am sure he will be on later to gloat he is watchin Tennessee right now.. but he was excited for Hendrix....
Hendrix looked really good in his limited time. Kelly was asked if he was now #2 and he was emphatic that Crist was #2, that Hendrix still doesn't know enough of the offense. I really liked how our offense played today, we didn't waste redzone penetrations, got TD's runnning and passing. No turnovers!! We ran for almost 300yds again today. Jonas and Cierre both ran well and scored. Tommy looked good, not great but steadily improving. Not sure he has a big upside but if we can run the football he doesn't have to be Andrew Luck, just make good decisions and protect the football. Only thing I was disappointed in was our defense really had a hard time with the Air Force offense, they consistently beat us to the edge on the option and Jefferson hit some recievers for big plays as well. While granted we had the reserves in for the last 2 Air Force drives, they also were playing backups and they just cut through our guys like a hot knife through butter. But glad we got those guys some work, they'll be seeing Navy in a few weeks! We needed all of those points! Last year at Norman Air Force ran for 350+ yds on an excellent OU defense and OU was lucky to get the win. So I don't want to seem like I'm complaining!! I like the win and think we are growing as a team. One thing I didn't understand about Air Force, was when they were down 42-16 and had 4th and 12 at the 15 yd line they kicked the FG. This after they had run a fake punt, a onside KO try, and was at that point 5 out of 5 on 4th down. FG meant nothing...why not go for it? Go Irish! Great win!
A few observations. In the first half we were unstopable. We had 6 possessions and scored 6 TDs. Also in the first half AF scored 17 pts. Defense forces FG attempt and (dreaded) special teams jumps off side and gives them a first down inside 5 yd. line. AF scored a TD. Later defense forces a punt and special teams gives up 20 yds on fake punt. AF then scores. I attribute 6 pts. vs D in first half and 11 vs special teams. Fear the swabbies.
Nice win by the Irish. The defense has had better days but the offense picked up the slack. Now it's time to get ready for USC. GO IRISH
1. Kelly Could have made the score anything he wanted to. AF was overmatched. 2. Oline Road-graded the entire AF defense, which they out-weighed by 60lbs per man. 3. TD on the pylon The entire pylon is in the endzone. It's like the foul-pole in baseball, which is entirely in fair territory. If you hit it, you score. The toes struck the pylon, before the heel came down on the line. 4. Andrew Hendrix Kelly's offense is not designed for a dropback passer OR an option speedster. It's a balanced offense for a QB who can run AND pass. Hendrix and Golson can do both. The time will come when the Irish need them... 5. Chase Hounshell Another 6'5" freshman beastie boy had his debut and he looked great! They say he was recruited as an OL, but was immediately moved to defense when they discovered how evil he was. Did you see the big smile on his face when he was hitting people? Who was his high school coach? Hannibal Lecter? 6. George Atkinson, is becoming a weapon. He was the fastest kid in California. 7. Robby Toma, looks at least as good as Riddick to me. 8. Punt returns (sigh) 9. Defense on the edges AF came in with the #3 offense in the nation and that offense is designed to get to the edges. Navy does NOT run the same offense! Last year, the Navy option gashed our defense right up the middle with a fullback named Teich who had over 200 yards. AF had almost no yards between the tackles today. The Navy could be in a heap O'Trouble.
JoCo, Reference #3. Interesting. So a receiver could hit the top of the pylon with his foot and land 3 feet out of bounds and it would be considered a catch/touchdown. I never knew that.
Following JO'Co..... 1. Agreed. 2. A complete mismatch. 3. I think the ball was over the goal line before his foot came down anywhere. That was the call I believe. 4. Exactly right with Hendrix. Would have like to see him air one out to see his arm strength. Rees is cool under fire and pretty accurate but I'm more convinced than ever that he knows who he is throwing to when they break the huddle. I quit counting how many wide open receivers he missed. That will hurt against good teams. 5. Another animal. This team is loaded with bad attitude. 6. Atkinson is a super star in the making. 7. I like Toma a lot but Riddick showed you what he can do yesterday. 8. We had punt returns?
ND <r><QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> Exactly! This offense is awesome with a QB that has the ability to run in addition to being an accurate passer. It makes it so much harder to defend is the D has to account for the QB as a possible run threat.<br/> <br/> Terry,<br/> <br/> I was thinking about the the backup QB thing last night and I think Kelly is right. If Rees go down with an injury Hendrix is not ready to take over this offense full time yet so Crist is the obvious choice. Just keep putting Hendrix in there when you can and when his time comes he should be real good. I really like what I saw from the little he played yesterday.<br/> <br/> we haven't landed a QB in this years' recruiting class and I hope we don't now. With Hendrix and Golson on the bench give that scholie to a RB or DB. I think if we do taake a QB this year somebody will end up transferring anyway. We can wait till next year and get another dual threat guy and it's fine with me. <E>8)</E></r>
