We started to feel the effects of hurricane Irene today. We are 306 miles west of the eye of the storm according to the local weather guru. Winds holding at 15 - 20 mph with higher gust and rain bands that breeze through at mach 7 as they spin in the counter clockwise motion. As one that has lost his roof to hurricanes I recommend that my brothers and sisters in the NE have water, candles and canned food available. If you can get your hands on a generator with a few cans of gas do it. It may be several days before your power is back on. A coleman one burner gas stove from Walmarts will work wonders when you want hot food and make you the hero of the neighborhood....

    Good luck...

    Ralph

Thanks Ralph....we expect her to pay us a visit tonite. We're getting everything battened down around here today in advance. Initial storm bands are beginning to work their way thru the area.....gonna be quite a night.

You know it's gonna be a bad day when you wake up to a Weather Channel truck driving through the neighborhood!

What is the rating of this storm now. I just looked at a live map on the weatherchannel.com and don't see a well defined eye.

We're getting the outer bands now....nasty stuff to arrive after midnite - of course.

She's currently a Cat 2, expected to make landfall north of us which means we will be on the "weak" side of the storm. Local impact expected to be 80 mph winds, 8-10 inches of rain and 5-10 storm surge, tho at low tide which is a great thing...pretty manageable for these parts but a long, exciting and likely sleep deprived night. Stay tuned....

We're back.....lost power about 3:30 and came back on about 10:30. She stayed true to her forecast track passing offshore about 80 miles to our east....so we got the weak side of the storm. We had 80 mph gusts but nothing sustained greater than 60-70, with about 8 inches of rain and 5-6 foot surge which came at low tide thankfully. All in all no big deal for these parts really....

A quick survey of the neighborhood showed some trees down, lots of branches, shingles and localized flooding but nothing of significance. We had a palm tree knocked to the ground that I just put in last spring but we were very fortunate.....still gusty and rainy but she has pretty much left the area....good riddance Irene.

Krebsie, Jiffy she's on her way......
