 you know what he does love it. his face lights up with all the stories about his students. remember he has only been teaching for 6 years this will be 7 his pay schedule is the same as that of a young person just beginning. When he was forced to retire from Avery after 30 years becuase he was 50 he went back to school since the teaching creditional had changed . it took him 2.5 years we used our savings and retirement to pay fr school no loans. then he wass hired out in the desert where the pay scale is about half of what it is here where we live. but they needed him. it was a challenge and he accepted it and he loves it. I wish you could see him tell the stories of the kids there last assignment is to interview a family member who was or is part of history. the reaction from the kids pricelss most of them never knew the family history. and him relaying the stories .. worth even more . we give up alot but you know its worth it. I am very proud of the teacher he has become.
I know the feeling Diane, only Math at the Community College level after leaving FPL with an early retirement during a reorganization. I was never permanent and was not part of the retirement program but did take a small amount of cash in an alternate program I was in. But nothing can replace the satisfaction I got out of teaching. I don't know if you remember but I called when Jim was job hunting and getting a little frustrated, he wasn't in as I recall and if memory serves me right you and I talked for a bit. I may remember wrong. Any way tell Jim I love that assignment.
 yes we did talk and he really appreciates having you to bounce things off of. I am glad he is doing what he loves teaching the kids about American history. and the assignment its one of the best I have ever heard. even our own grandchildren learned of famous people we are related to.. Briana was in the 8th grade this past school year for her last project she just wanted to take grandpa to school as her project. instead she did a report on her great-great grand uncle Robert E. Lee. ( Jims great grandmother sister was Martha Lee),things the other kids didnt know till Bri told them about it. The World needs more teachers like you and Jim. who truely love what they do.
Thanks Diane, I certainly have loved teaching, but I have decided that at my age I went to be free to travel and just not be tied to a schedule. We are planning to be inFlorida for seven Gator games this year. Six of the games are on three back to back weekends so we are planning on staying in Florida for the week each time. Then I qualified for two bowling events in the Senior Games and we will be in Raleigh for a week for that. Good news is that we get to stay with one of our kids for a week each time and get to see some grandkids each time. I have volunteered to do several math anxiety seminars and also guest at a couple of classes on the use of the Texas Instrument graphing calculator. I miss teaching, but will value my time doing other things. Like someone told, you are choosing between two things you really like and that is a good thing. I have to agree.
