I'd be willing to bet that 80% of college students could not tell you why that date is significant if you offered them free rum and cokes for life.

But our local newspaper, the Asbury Park Press, gave not one mention to perhaps the greatest act of mass heroism in US military history on its front page. Instead, complete with photos, Page One is dedicated to the annual gay and lesbian parade in Asbury Park.

Somewhere my dad is looking at us and saying that he escaped in a nick of time.

I wonder if the benefactors of that invasion remember the date. Probably not The French would be part of Germany if it were not for those brave souls.

I agree. However I am afraid it is human nature. That was 67 years ago, I was in college in the 50's and I have to admit I was not much aware o events in the 1890's and before.

And it's to bad as not understanding history leads to repeating the mistakes of the past.

That's why God created history teachers. Every single year I have to contend with science teachers telling my students that history class is irrelevant and should be abolished. I always respond with these words, "If history class is irrelevant, then why do the Nazis and Communists always rewrite the history books?"

    I like that JO'Co.

This is one math teacher who doesn't believe that History classes should be abolished.

The worst time for the science teachers was five years ago. We received our first new history textbooks in 25 years, and the science teachers told our students that it was a "waste of money" that should have been used for "lab equipment."

The science classes received new textbooks too. I explained to the students that science texts have to be replaced every year, because what science teachers teach is not true...unlike history teachers. The uproar against me only lasted five weeks; then Pluto was abolished as a planet and they discovered water on Mars...
