Bill, I don't have a problem with the proposed new rules. I do think the NCAA needs to take this action though. No matter what the SEC does, someone is going to say that is not enough or some other conference is going to do something different and the SEC is going to say that is not enough. Why isn't the NCAA taking this up? If this is that important and the rest of the FBS world is so outraged, why doesn't the NCAA rules committee address this? :?
That is a very good question kp and I don't have an answer. The SEC and other conferences do have rules over and above what the NCAA requires, but in this case I agree it should become an NCAA issue.
Clearly I think the other conferences who have rules more stringent than the NCAA regs would like for their position on recruiting to be the NCAA rule. I would agree with them. I think the current NCAA regulations do the kids no favors and do help the SEC.
To be clearer, the SEC is within the rules, other conferences and ND have enacted rules more strict than the NCAA rules. These conferences led by the B1G now would like to see the NCAA tighten rules and your SEC commissioner , Mike Slive, seems to be in favor of the SEC adopting rules more strict on this issue as well. So it seems as going forward there maybe a new rule more strict than the current NcAA rule that the SEC uses.
KP...what folks are saying here is that the NCAA hasn't addressed the issue for whatever reason. I don't feel like it's an attack on the SEC. Kudos to the SEC for looking at the issue.
Don't get me wrong, I am all for the NCAA tightening up the rule, but I am also for following the rules. Each conference (or independent) gets to decide if they would like to enact rules that are more stringent than the NCAA, but as far as I know there has not been any evidence of the SEC violating the NCAA rules as they exist now in this matter.
No, I think that was fair... I have always said that I don't entirely understand the process but it doesn't seem good for the recruits (to me). Yes, there has been criticism of the process but I don't criticize any school or conference who is following the rules...and I don't think BT did either. Even "back when" when the discussion was held here, it seems to my memory that the point was made that many in the SEC don't like the oversigning either. Again, kudos to the SEC for looking at the process...and no criticism of schools that are following the rules... And I will stop here. I did not intend to ruffle your feathers. Hell, I thought I was agreeing with you.
And I did not start this topic to ruffle feathers either. I am glad that the SEC is taking a look at this, but I hope we do not over react. I agree with kp that if the issue is that big the NCAA needs to act. But it is not the least bit hard to understand why kp feels like he does. It is also a bit strange to be in a position where people feel the SEC has some sort of an advantage by following the rules.
As I recall, the most outspoken and harshly critical opponent of the practice is the SEC's own President Machen of Florida....it's quite possible that the commish is simply following the desires of the leadership of many of his member institutions....
More riddles, ok, I'll bite....who guys? Bill for starting the topic, TOK for commenting and trying to clarify, Stu for giving the conference kudos, me for referencing Pres. Machen's outspoken opposition and suggesting a possible explanation for the commish's initiative or all of the above?
