Sean Casey as career .304 hitter traded by the Pirates to the Tigers for a AA pitcher? I don't get it.
I love Sean Casey but he's a singles hitter playing a power position. How are the Reds doing without him?
8) The other teams aren't like the Yankees. They can't just buy anyone they want or keep anyone they want. They have a budget. A player like Casey is going to be lost to free agency anyway. Why not trade him for a Double-A prospect who will be an affordable pitcher for 5-6 years when he comes up? Its the only way that small market teams like Cincinnati can survive. What the Tigers get is a real hitter for this pennant race. Their fans could use one of those pennants. Its been a long time... ...............DD
Casey is a free agent at the end of the season. He currently is making 8 mil. a year. Pitt decided that they were going nowhere so why pay 3 mil or so for Casey for the next few months.
I'm a big Sean Casey fan. Last year at a Reds game, he autographed my grandsons' baseball caps. He's aces in my book.
If Casey is healthy, this is a very good deal for the Tigers. Casey is a contact, line-drive hitter who is tailor made for spacious Comerica Park. He is a two time All Star with close to a 300 lifetime batting average and a good fielder. Home run hitters have tended to fare poorly at Comerica but guys who can drive the ball and hit for average can do quite well given how large the playing field at Comerica is. They gave up a marginal, Double A prospect whom the Pirates took to create the illusion of a trade. The sole goal of the Pirates was to dump Casey's salary.
Not that the Tigers need a good glove at first base. If anyone has seen the last two games you know that errors by the first basemen cost both games. Got to hand it to Demetri Young. 3 errors in one inning is impressive. It's a natural hat trick.
Astros have to kissing up to do with Roy Oswalt. The rumour got out that he was on the block and yesterday the Astros aknowledged it. He didn't take it too well, next year is the last year of his contract and then he can test the free agent waters. I'll bet if Uncle Drayton doesn't pretty much cave to what ever it is that Roy wants in his next contract before the start of next year that he'll go free agent. Terry
You almost traded two of your starters yesterday. Oswalt was an heartbeat away from the Mets according to the Mets G.M. And Clemenes was even closer to becoming a Red Sox. Apparently the Astros owner just could not part with him against the advice of his management.
Oswalt and Clemens are the only 2 guys we can count on to have a good outing and they are going to trade them? What idiots.
And this illustrates my points: 1. the Yankees are the richest team but not the only team willing to take high priced players on the fly 2. it takes two to tango. You must have willing and incompetent ownership on the other side to do the deal.
8) It only takes one to tango if you're the Yankees. The owner can be incompetent and spend over $200 million per year to be in 2nd place, then go out and spend $20 million more for Abreu and Wilson...
Arthur Rhodes, Phillie Reliever, discussing former teamate Cory Lidle. Looks like the Yankees have got a real winner!
He's pitching tonight. We'll see. If he's better than Shaun Chacon or Sydney Ponson we're ahead of the game. Abreu and Craig Wilson are certainly working out nicely so far. Arthur Rhodes? The Yankees have used him like a pinata his whole career. Now he's banished to the vast wasteland known as Philadelphia. No wonder he's upset.
Sorry to get off the topic in this Yankee thread but Casey has fit right in with the Tigers. Hit a HR in his first start tues.
