BT there is no question the BCS system is very limiting with who it allows to settle the issue on the field. And Sid has a good point.......I don't think any of us want to see football champions determined via the same method as before the BCS.....or basketball champions for that matter. But I do think heavy emphasis on a regular season of accomplishment against a higly rtaed schedule in a major conference needs to have it's merit rewarded.....which the BCS does try to do and whioch basket ball tries to do as well. In the NCAA basketball tourney there is a more level playing field between teams in most years ( not all ) than you see in most cases between mid-level football teams and the elite football teamsof any season.
say what you want but UCONN is proof positive that the Big East was the best conference this year. I don't think Nova deserved a bid... Had UCONN not won the tourney, I would say that they shouldn't get in. However, you keep pointing out that they are 9-9 in league play.. true.. They were also 32-9 on the year. That means no one outside of the Big East beat them all year.
This discussion reminds me of something that happened in my past. MCG, the rules are the rules. You don't change them to change the outcome of the season. In 1979, I was reluctantly on strike at Firestone Tire and Rubber company in Lavergne, Tennessee. I was receiving $100 a week strike benefits. I supplemented my income by drag racing in Heavy bracket at Union Hill raceway. Heavy was one bracket slower than Pro bracket, one step faster than the street car division. I was running a '69 Dodge Dart 340 4-speed turning between 9.63 and 9.88 second 1/8th mile times... very respectable in my bracket (9.5 to 12 second 1/8 mile times). One night, there was a 1975 Ford Mustang II 4 banger automatic showed up in Street bracket. Street bracket was for cars turning the 1/8 mile slower than 12 seconds. This car ran 22.1 second passes time after time after time... consistently. He was running against people that was having to give him as much as a 10.1 second head start. Half the competition red lighted while watching that little bucket of bolts get half way down the track before they could start. That little Mustang won street division that night. He won it, not because his was the best race car that night, but because his car fit best within the rules presented. His car probably wouldn't spin the tires on icy pavement. It was consistently ran within .02 seconds each trip down the track.
Dave, It's impossible for you just to watch a game and enjoy it isn't it? There always has to be some nefarious plot behind it.
No plot George. I'm not the lone wolf in this type of thinking. Google the topic "Is UConn the best team" or "did UConn deserve the championship" and see how many articles pop up on the subject. My reason for posting this however was the article by Pat Dooley of Gatorsports that ponders just how football fans would feel if the same results came out of a football playoff....i.e. an 8-4 UConn team going on a tear and winning the NCAA football championship.....while maybe a team like Alabama didn't even get invited. I'm just saying as I have all along that what we have with the BCS is far better than what we used to have with strictly poll voting and that a playoff isn't necessarily going to end the debates at the water cooler.
A thousand humble apologies, O young(er) one. That statement alone eliminates any issue I might have had with you over the number of teams from the Big East.
MCG, If you or the people at gatorsports cannot see how completely different the two sports are, and how because of those differences you simply cannot compare the two, then you all are doomed to wallow in your own inexplicable rationale. Tom, you were a drag racer? Cool!
I was still drag racing when Cindy and I got together. We had a lot of fun with it. Given the opportunity, I would probably do it again. Not enough free time over the last 20 years to make it happen. Also, I probably don't have the reaction times I used to have. The last car I actively campaigned was a monster to get hooked up. It was a '70 Plymouth Duster with a 440 six pack 4 speed.
