Baseball is becoming an extravagance. Should I spend $500+ to take my family to a ball game or buy two weeks of groceries... This bubble is about to burst. Only this time most people won't care.
Obviously I want Albert to stay, but I can also see the point of the Cards.....how many Pitchers could they get with all that $$$...
I have thought that about the salaries of pro athletes for a long time, but they seem to just keep going up up up.
I heard an interesting analysis of the situation today on sports radio. The package his agent is looking for would have Pujols at 39 years old in the last year of the contract. The big money teams who normally put up the dollars that raise the bar - specifically, the Red Sox and Yankees - are OK at 1B, so the Cards may want to let the market determine Pujols' value as opposed to negotiating his agent's numbers (dollars and years). If that's the case, they might intentionally let him go to free agency...........then the Cubs can sign him.
 Maybe McCourt's ex-wife will sign him. She's in the market for another pool boy...Pujols de Poolboy?
I heard that Big Al wants a 10 year contract. The Astros gave Jeff Bagwell a long deal when he was in his early 30's, by the time he reached the last few years of his deal he was totally useless his shoulder was gone, but he refused to quit..why because if he accepted that he could no longer play and retired he forfieted a lot of money. It was sort of ugly at the end, but Drayton and he finally came to some settlement and ended friends and Jeff's still with the organization. I think sometimes the players want that big last contract as compensation for those early contracts where they truly were great players but weren't being paid like great players.
