Big time players....NFL type players Kp in the Top 32 of FBS but without the rehabilitative resources to get over injury and certainly without the time to devote to it as they are all students.....with classes and finals. Just sayin.....there's more to it. Why go from one controversy to another. Hey....did you happen to catch Tim Tebow and company absolutely destroy #3 Cincinatti in the Sugar Bowl last year? It was annihilation city and the Gators played at such a high level that night I am convinced they would have beaten anyone in the country in that game and please.....no one comment if you didn't see it. But I ask......why should UF have been given another chance in a playoff? I think Bama proved this year that a team on a mission like UF might have been in a playoff rematch last year would have been quite a formidable and perhaps impossible opponent to defeat. Before you get all smug and teeheeing ******** just confirm you saw UF-Cinci first. The point is.....Bama beat UF on the big stage in Atlanta in a defacto national semi-final and I don't believe the Tide should have had to do it again. To prove what????
I would prefer to have a definitive playoff system...but like Dave, I would miss the bowls. It doesn't seem completely fair to compare it to the lower divisions for a number of reasons.
That is a statement that I agree with. Two totally different animals and caliber of athletes. And like BB the lower football divisions do not have a bowl system to get in the way like FBS does. There is such a build up to the bowls.....the fans look forward to it and to be able to win and go out on a winning note means a lot to the fans. I suspect that even though their team was not in a playoff that Buckeye fans are pretty damned happy with their W over SEC member Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. I doubt they would trade that for a playoff loss and remember....like BB only one team in a football playoff would end the season on a winning note. It's similar to a wild card team in the NFL playoffs. Sure nice to get there but I have witnessed the Detroit Lions many times scrape their way in to the playoffs only to get thumped and leave everyone grumbling the rest of the offseason. OK....back to #1 seed Ohio State. Yes....they deserve #1 in the polls and #1 overall seed in the tourney if they can maintain.
Just to respond on the hijack trail for a brief moment, while I can only speak for one Buckeye fan, I would GLADLY trade a win in a glorified exhibition i.e, bowl game, for an opportunity to play for the title any day.....that's like asking somebody if they'd rather play in the NIT and win a game or two or go to the dance.....a no brainer in my book. Any program that prefers not to compete at the highest level, would probably be better served taking up knitting or something less stressful.....back to basketball.
Can you clarify if this topic is about Mens or Womens basketball at Ohio State, I've lost track!
I had to go back to the beginning and it seems evident that Don was referencing the men.....our ladies have been disappointing this season at least by Foster's recent standards. Nice article about Sully in USA Today.....good kid. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/coll...n/2011-01-17-jared-sullinger-ohio-state_N.htm
Ohio State would have needed at least two wins in order for that opportunity to happen ( 8 team playoff ). I suspect if the bowls were thrown to the curb in favor of a playoff you would see at least a 16 team playoff and the NC would not only have to win it's conference championship game but also 4 playoff games. The ones luckiest enough not to sustain injury would be left standing. I think if a playoff were to be installed it would be a more manageable "plus one" and the Buckeyes would have been left out anyway ( top 4 seeds only ) and appreciating a Sugar Bowl bid. It ain't basketball.
TOK,Bill, Tom.... can/should we move this reply to a "college football playoff" topic to get this thread back to where it was originally intended? It's a topic worthy of discussion, but probably best to keep them clean.....
Well there are several replies in this thread about college football and playoff....so lets all agree to this. No more college football posts (by anybody) in this topic, or they will be deleted. Ohio State Basketball!
Glad to see this topic back to Ohio State basketball! The Illini man handled MSU at home and if they can shoot lights out again Saturday vs the Buckeyes, we will have our hands full. Iowa up at home here in Columbus this evening. All we need to do at this point is keep winning.
I don't mind the tough conference games going down to the wire night after night....helps build the kind of tournament toughness they are going to need in March. That said, I do hope they play better defense.... Another good article in the WSJ....I guess I knew it, something that I don't think about tho, Matta is only 43. Hopefully he's going to be around a long, long time..... http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703954004576090390898408786.html
Game with Iowa tonight might prove to be interesting as well, even though their record does not support the argument. Their top shooting %player in trey range did not play in Iowa City. He is shooting at the 58% mark and will play here this evening. I hope we challenge them early on the defensive side and not permit too many treys.
Buckeyes defeat Iowa 70-48 here in Columbus. A rather ragged game with numerous turnovers, but a win is a win. Bucks now 19-0/
Terry, I see where Texas won their game against the Aggies tonight. Congratulations to you as well. Really surprised by the margin of victory?
Ohio State will face seven ranked opponents in the next nine games. (All Big Ten Opponents) Something is going to have to give. No way can we keep that unbeaten status! Defense will be needed to stay atop of the conference race.
I continue to be amazed at young Craft. Last night may have been as impressive a defensive performance as I ever seen in Columbus by an individual player. How many steals did he have? 7? A freshman? Geez....by the time he's a senior, he'll be illegal. Sully gets all the press, but Craft is extraordinary in his own right.....
