Arm Strength. Why is it that somebody like Tim Lincecum who is a bean pole can throw so hard? Why is it that somebody like Tommy Rees can't and apparently no amount of physical maturation (he is only 18 ) or strength training is going to fix that. Apparently an OL or DL can mature and get stronger and that strength will help him with his position, and a MLB hitter can get bigger and stronger and hit more home runs. But when it comes to throwing you are what you are? Just seems odd.
I can't explain the physiology but throwing hard is no ticket to success. Joba Chamberlain can pop it 98mph but its as straight as an arrow and hitters tee off on his fastball. Movement and location are more important.
Well no doubt with regards to baseball, I was thinking more of why a QB can't improve arm strength to make those deep out throws on a "frozen rope". Doesn't seem to be something that can be done, if it could then most if not all QB's who would put in the work would be able to do it. Seems like for QB's what you have is what you get.
It's not a matter of strength, it's a matter of speed. Arm speed, hand speed and foot speed are natural talents. Improvements in technique can enhance the talent but some will always run faster, throw harder and hit drives further.
OK math major. It's a matter of leverage: now you explain it to me... Throwing a football is mostly done with the wrist, forearm and upper shoulder. It's the same motion that a catcher uses to throw a baseball, because QBs and catchers must get rid of the ball quickly. It's a different throwing motion than a pitcher who has time to reach back as far as he can; propel himself off the rubber; and use his weight-shift to transfer all of his body energy into the ball. For the QBs and catchers, a quick release has a higher priority than throwing hard. re: Rees Either you're born with good wrists or you're not. Golson is smaller, but he's got a cannon. Its all in the wrists...
Arm speed, leverage, whip and torque. I gotta meeting to ******** thru in about 20. I'll be back then but that's your cliff's notes version brb
Also, have you seen Lincecum's 12-6 old school curve ball? Sweet Jesus that thing is dirty... he comes right off the top with that SOB in the same motion as his fast ball. I'd call that dude a motherf***** while I tipped my cap to him. That's the dirtiest pitch I've seen in the big leagues since Orel was a kid
