Interesting lists that can be debated to be sure but I agree with much of it. http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2006/TQ/Tuesday_Question.htm
 Is that list a gag? Many of those QBs don't belong in a Top 10, but some of them, like Charlie Ward, Ken Dorsey, Michael Vick and Tommie Frazier don't even belong in the Top 100! Tell he he didn't put Tommie Frazier #1? How embarrassing for him. There's a lot of ways that you could measure greatness in a college QB. How about Roger Staubach beating Notre Dame and taking Navy to a #2 ranking? That was 1963 and they haven't beaten the Irish nor have they been in the Top 10 since he left... How about Jim Plunkett of Stanford? All he did was pass his team into the Rose Bowl where he bombed Ohio State's "Greatest Team of All-Time" as he won the Heisman Trophy. Where do you think Stanford would have been that year if Tommie Frazier or Charlie Ward had been their QB? You want miracle workers? How about Doug Flutie Of Boston College or Bob Griese of Purdue? How about 2-way player QBs? Johnny Lujak of Notre Dame was the best. What about scoring points? Paul Hornung of Notre Dame was also the field goal kicker. Raw athletic ability? The fastest runner I ever saw at QB wasn't Michael Vick, it was Steve Young of BYU and he was 6'5"... That list sucks. The writer doesn't know what he's talking about...IMHO. ...............JO'Co
I don't know how you'd make up a list of top 10 College QB's. I do agree that it should have nothing to do with NFL career or Pro Potential/Draft position. I loved the way Tommie Fraser played the game at Neb, and he was a winner without a doubt. But after his injury there was some controversy wheter or not he was the best QB on his team, I believe Brooks Can't think of his last name did a great job in his place not as good a runner but a much better passer. Are you going on one great year, like Andre' Ware? Team record, if so then why isn't Jay Barker on the list? What about Vinnie and Gino? They were as Ken Dorsey. Nobody even mentioned James Street, he was incredible running the wishbone. And how about the talent that they had around them, it's a lot easier to be great when all you have to do is throw the ball to great WR's behind a great OL. Anyway I don't know how you come up with a list. Mine would be different than that one that's for sure. Terry
This is the second "all-time" list I've seen from CFN. I don't recall the first, but I recall feeling the same as I do about this list. It's crap. I suspect that the author is trying to attract attention and controversy. Either that or he doesn't know a college QB from and OT. Some of the names on the list are no-brainers, but their relative positions don't make sense (See JO'Co post above). Either way, I'm convinced that the writers at CFN don't know much about the CF part of their name.
I don't believe you guys read the lists very well. There are three opinions and some of the picks differ and may agree with your own more. In any event I agree that NFL success does not translate to this list at all.
Another note on this is that Tommie Frazier gets the mention I believe not only for his own talents but because he was at the helm of one of if not THE most powerful college football team that ever played.
Vick? Ward? Flutie? V. Young? Manning? Elway? Major Harris? Ten greatest of all time? Ptooey! Each of the above did notable, even great things for their teams......and they might have been the best QB in college football in a given year or even a two-year stretch.....but among the 10 greatest of all time? Again, I say, Ptooey!
I just think it's an impossible task, because of the style of college football. It's much easier for Pro Football because you look at passing yardage and championships. Even there though you run into some problems with generational differences in the game. But an interesting list anyway. I just can't agree with it. Look at Danny Weurfel one of the greatest Gator QB's for sure, but one of the greatest all-time? I wouldn't put him on that list, and that's not to denigrate Weurfel he was a great college QB, but he played in a system that he really fit. Same for Ty Detmer, and all those Texas Tech QB's, etc. As I said before I doubt if I could come up with a top 10 though that you guys would agree with either. Terry
Well fraiser I would probaly puy under one of the best running backs of all time not QB. lol I didn't see Jim Bob Cooter on the list come on now. Where's the love Detmer there's a name I havn't heard in awhile.
Terry, Danny W had the heart and mind of a champion. Florida won something like 23 SEC games in a row with Danny as Qb, 3 straight SEC Championships and one National title and another title game appearance after a 12-0 season. His Qb rating will never be topped and he executed spurrier's offense like no other Qb has been able to do. Much more than a product of the system I say. "He was the only college passer to ever have back-to-back seasons with over a 170 passer rating."
8) re: most powerful team of all-time. There's a lot of candidates for that, but most of the so-called experts that I've read say that USC 1972 was the "greatest team of all-time." They alternated two super QBs: Pat Haden and Mike Rae. Both of them were MUCH better than Tommy Frazier...
Weurfel was no doubt the perfect Spurrier QB and had a great college career, but the fun' gun offense is just another version of the shotgun offense that throws the ball 50 times a game. Look at all the records that Texas Tech QB's set from that style off offense. The only difference between the Tech QB's and Spurrier QB's is that Spurrier also had a defense to shut out the other teams.....Tech has been a poor to average defense.
Terry, Spurrier's Gator teams had an amazing balance of running vs. passing. They rarely threw it 50 times per game if ever. They only got out of balance the very few times they were significantly behind.
