I can't believe that you're even out there! I'm sitting here typing with a radio at my back. The radio is giving those storm warnings advising everyone in SoCal to stay off the roads and avoid the desert at all costs! Highway 138 is closed and the flash floods have created rivers across the streets in some areas. (I guess you already found some of those...eh?) In Hesperia, one road was closed, because a flash river going across the road was 17 feet deep! As someone who works out there, I know that this is not unusual. The desert has no drainage; raging rivers form everywhere, even across highways; the roads are asphalt laid over sand, so the sand underneath the road is washed away, leaving a large sink hole that can swallow entire trucks...

    Uh...get out of there!

I am not a "hold my beer and watch this" kind of guy. I am an avid four-wheel-drive off road enthusiast but not very knowledgable about deserts. We were lucky in the outcome I will admit. A stupid driver would have tried to cross the "river" with a different outcome. I'm still concerned about the teenagers we encountered. The rangers know about them... I warned them... Don't know what more we could have done.

Glad to see that you and Cindy got in OK. Our school district out there takes some criticism for closing from Dec 16-Jan 10, but now you know why we do. Every year they have to close the schools anyway, because they're snowed in, while the only way into the desert from this side, the Cajon Pass, is closed to everything except the BNSF railroad. This year it wasn't snow, it was ten days of rain and there is no part of SoCal which has enough drainage to handle that...

    See you tomorrow night......JO'Co

Good friends, good food, what could be better?

We enjoyed our once wever 13 years meeting!

We are now in Vegas for the next 4 days spending time on the strip, downtown, and around Bolder dam. As I explained to Jim, my step father cannot make himself call it Hoover dam. It was Bolder dam when it was built and it will be Bolder dam until he dies!)

I hope you don't mind me sneaking in here a moment but Tom and Cindy are going to have to take more roadtrips out west. The adventure of the trip has kept me wanting to read more details especially with the above normal hazards you have had to face.

Merry Christmas to all and safe journey's home.....

Jump in any time Ralph. My ramblings are nothing compared to the JO'Co trip reports we were used to reading in the past.

Death Valley was hopefully the last of the "above normal hazards" we will see. We installed new tires on the RV so no blowouts on this trip are expected. We greased the axles so hopefully no bearing failures. We have the fuel stops mapped out so shouldn't be stranded due to fuel outage.

We went to take pictures of the new bridge bypassing the dam. The bridges I spoke of were on highway 93 (the highway with the new bypass bridge). They span across highway 93 and there are 4 or 5 of them. there are no roads on either side connecting them to anything.

I plan on getting a few pictures on our trip back home.
