One thing from Kelly's press conference sort of bothered me. He commented that the signs that were used in the game vs Utah (similar to the signs used by Chip Kelly at Oregon) were implemented because he felt his signals from the sideline had been compromised. Sort of puzzling to me, I know teams always trying to get an edge on the competition from the Patriots stealing signs via video a few years ago to baseball teams trying to steal the catchers signals, etc. So how does an experienced coach like him ever get into a position where somebody has done that?
OK Brian Kelly is a Red Sox fan, I'm so ashamed!! It was bad enough that Charlie was a Yankees fan but now this! BTW: Is the Yankee stadium surface turf or grass?
I guess it's in prime condition given that no game has been played there in a month or so, I wonder with the growing season at an end up north if the infield grass will be rooted or will we see clods of it comming up during the game. BTW: are there any MLB stadiums outdoors who play on artifical turf?
This is from one of Coach D's articles; I thought it was pretty good, he goes on to give his opinion on how to defend the option but his point about how the Navy game has sort of defined Bob Diaco, fairly or not, is a valid one. Defending the Option
Whew... Caddy Shack... Not quite the video I expected from a college man talking about great grass!
I do believe that Autizen Stadium stands had quite a bit of competition in this area during the 97 and 98 seasons. That was from the sidelines of D K Royal stadium. ... with at least a very popular running back.
Good article on ND/Army by Ivan Maisel. I am convinced that Notre Dame of that time was so positioned in the Nation that no team since has come even close, sure there has been many great teams, but they were regionally great not nationally great like Notre Dame. No B10, Pac10, SEC, etc game is ever likely to reach the level of those ND/Army games esp those post WWII while Army was still great. Mich/OSU was big in the Midwest sure, and there are other great rivalry's, but nationally none couldn't match ND/Army. Nobody could and nobody ever will, not even if Notre Dame returns to national prominence the stage is too crowded now. ND/Army
ok sorry i remember now...Army beat ND 59 to zip...the next week they beat Navy 35 to zip...my memory is crapping out!
Yeah I think in 44 and 45 ND was pretty depleted, Leahy in the Navy along with all the best players. Took some pretty good beatings by Army those years, as did a lot of other teams.
during the war years, the colleges were depleated of athletes. I remember one year, I think it was 1944...Brown beat BC 56 to 0.The talk was that the Ivy Leaguers "bought" their way out of the service.
Somewhere over the years I heard a story that talked about how Leahy recruited future ND student athletes while coaching service teams during the war. If true, it certainly paid off from 1946 through 1949.
Notre Dame - Army, night time, prime time under the lights at Yankee Stadium.....are you kidding me. I think that is just awesome.....what an event! I don't have a dog in the hunt, but if it were possible, I'd surely be there.....great stuff fellas. As it is, I won't even be able to see it on the tube courtesy of a scout camping trip with my son to some godforsaken island just off the coast! Pics please! Video of the Guard entrance would be cool as well..... 8)
