I have no idea how Sports Illustrated came up with this list and not have Vincent Young on it. But the do have 3 Irish players, Jeff Samardzja, Bob Golic and Rocket Ismael. Golic was a surprise, not that he wasn't a great player but I didn't know that he was also an All-American Wrestler. Julius Peppers is their greatest. Greatest Athletes You could sure come up with a completely different 15 and be justified. Terry
I kept waiting for the greatest college athlete of all time to appear and he never did. Jim Thorp was an All-American football player, Played baseball and won the Olympic decathelon. He's not even mentioned? Obviously a worthless list.
#11 does not deserve to be there. The college athlete exemplifies the team first attitude. After that loss in triple overtime to UNC in 1957, the great Wilt Chamberlain told a reporter: "I scored 23 points but my teammates couldn't put a pea in the ocean." Some great college player!
8) What a totally worthless attempt to kiss our Irish arses. Three Irish football players in the Top 10 and just one month before football season? Tsk...tsk... I guess we're supposed to forgive and forget and start buying their crummy rag again...eh? Buzzzzzzzz wrong! There's just too much blood under the bridge. I will never buy another copy of SI as long as I live... As Gipper pointed out, Jim Thorpe was voted the "Greatest Athlete of the 20th Century" by poll, after poll, after poll of experts beginning in the 1920's and continuing right to the end of the century. To not even mention him is to impeach the credibility of the entire list... George also has a good point about Jim Brown. Since he was probably the greatest player ever at two sports, football and lacrosse, who else on this list was the greatest ever at even ONE sport? My own choice is local guy Jackie Robinson. He was an All-American in FOUR sports! Football, basketball, track and... oh yea...baseball. Where on this list is there anyone who was an All-American in even three sports? Jim Thorpe, Jim Brown and Jackie Robinson were the three greatest college athletes ever and nobody else on that list is even close. I'm not even going to argue about which one was the best, because I can't think of any arguments against the other two. All three were much better than the rest of that list, which was designed mostly to pander to us Irish football fans anyway... :x :x :x .................JO'Co
I thought I was the only person on earth who had sworn years ago following the Tarnished Dome article never again to read SI. I'm glad to know there are at least two of us. Sorry, Gip. I tried after learning your son works for them, but it's not going to happen. He's a sharp enough young man, he'll be quite successful without us old farts reading his magazine. Actually, JO'Co is not an old fart yet. He has quite a while to go before he falls into that category.
JO'Co's top three are right on. How the hell did I forget Jim Thorpe? I used to go whitewater rafting in Jim Thorpe, Pa. every summer. Drinking too much beer from aluminum cans, I think.
JO'Co Mike got a promotion and raise and was transfered by Time Inc. to Money, Fortune and Golf magazines. I doubt that you're a big Golf magazine guy.
Gip, Congratulations to Commish. I'm not surprised that he is movilng up. I read Money and Fortune in our office. I read Golf in the doctor's office.
Congrats to Commish! Success seems to follow him everywhere! As for me, I'm a subscriber to Money, but I don't read the other two. My policy is to subscribe only to those mags which I can get for huge teacher discounts and which aren't available at the barber shop across the street... ...............JO'Co
