I can agree with this: http://cfn.scout.com/2/988235.html Saban has the crystal ball......football that is.
Paul Fienbaum said, no kidding, that Robbie Caldwell the HC at Vanderbilt is an embarrassment to the college coaching profession. He ridiculed his folksy press conference with the SEC media. I guess we'll see if he can coach.
The guy who'd been there for awhile and had done a good job, up and resigned about a month ago...out of the blue. Said he wanted to spend more time with the family, travel, etc. I think he was 60 so that's not unreasonable. But timing was odd. Some said that he did it specifically so that Vandy would essentially be forced to hire Caldwell. Now I have no idea if Caldwell is a good coach or if he has a snow balls chance in hades to succeed at Vandy. But he comes across a little bit like a Billy Bob Cracker in his press conference. As we all know, you can have a lot of quirks to your personality if you win, so we'll see how Billy Bob does as the coach af Vandy.
Mark Richt at #3??? As bad as Tennessee has been the last two years, we have had his number. He should be no higher than 6. ... and if Tennessee beats them again this year, we'll see just how hot that seat is.
MR hasn't beat UF or UT with any consistency...and particularly has failed in the biggest games vs. Florida. I am surprised he is still there.
He's had some good teams and has been an excellent coach for UGA, he's not Urban Meyer or Nick Saban, but he's a good coach. I like Mark Richt a lot.
I guess that as an outsider, I have to ask who beyond #3 is better than Richt? and why? Inquiring minds want to know.
In my opinion, Steve Spurrier at #4 and Les Miles at #6 come to mind. As much as I don't like Spurrier for the same reasons that Florida fans didn't like Kiffen, he is a great coach. Put Richt at South Carolina and you would have a winless team.
In the blowout loss to Tennessee last year, the camera panned over to him many times. His expression never changed just like his game plan never changed. That was one of the issues I had with Fulmer. Unless he turns Georgia around to be at least 2nd in the SEC East, the Georgia faithful will be seeing Ray Goff's face when they look at Richt.
He's been at Georgia for awhile. At some point, you have to ask, is finishing 2nd or 3rd in the SEC East good enough for Georgia. The question now becomes, who are you going to get that's better?
Interesting answer, Tom. I actually was thinking of Spurrier when I asked the question. I guess because Miles has a NC under his belt, he also deserves consideration. Again, as an outsider I also wonder how long the Georgia faithful will tolerate consistently finishing behind FL and AL......and being owned by TN.
Tom, I'm not expert on SEC coaches... but I can tell you Les Miles ain't no rocket scientist... He makes too many bone-headed decisions to be considered an elite coach. Talent has carried him so far... We'll see how he does when he has to earn it through his decisions.
Typical Finebaum, nasty. He may have once been one of the most powerful people in the SEC but that was in the past. Most people I have read or heard discuss the new Vandy coach have been complimentary about him. Coaching at Vandy is a no win situation but Finebum insulting the coach shows what kind of guy he is. I think the rankings are pretty good. I do think Richt is a pretty good coach who wins consistently and has a couple of conference championships. However he has always managed to lose some games he shouldn't and does seem to come up short in big games. Miles is a question mark to me. You can't take that championship away from him but what the guy says about winning in spite of Miles has a ring of truth. He could move up the ranks or be fired. Meyer and Saban could switch. Dooley is another question mark, but I have a gut feel he is going to be successful and move up in the rankings.
I think a lot of us Gator fans feel that this guy may be able to help Tenn because of his pedigree. The last new UT coach had pedigree also but unlike Dooley he ran his mouth with nothing to substantiate it.....no track record to back it up. I like the way Dooley is approaching it and I'll take it as a quiet confidence he feels he will turn the Vols around.
