Today is the first day of my lifelong vacation. I have retired from the business world. It all seems kind of weird but in a good way. People have asked me how I feel about it. I've replied that I'm about 80% looking forward to it and 20% concerned about all the time I'm going to have on my hands. Friends who have retired tell me I'll be busier than before. One thing is certain. As long as there is a Skybox, I'll have at least one activity available to occupy my time constructively. One really nice thing among many that happened: My firm held a retirement get-together on the party deck at an Indianapolis Indians baseball game. The Indians are the AAA affiliate of the Pirates. It was a great time and a very generous gesture.
Sid, Congratulations and best of luck to you. It's not easy these days achieving retirement with a firm. I spent 23 years....working hard and achieving great results with my former company in Detroit and this recession and automotive implosion robbed me of the chance to see that job through to retirement. Now....I work my a** off 5 days a week and enjoy being retired in Florida on the weekends. I'm 55 and I figure 20 more years and maybe I'll be full time retired. 8)
Congratulations Sid! I have heard what you have heard from a number of my patients who have retired. They don't know how they had time to go to work, with all that they have to do now that they are retired. I'm sure you'll figure it all out!
7 or 8 years?? I thought you were retired, after all traveling around the globe is what rich retired folks do isn't it? BTW Has Cindy approved this goal?
hello sid! Mazel Tov from the mini state! I hope it works out well for you. I did it 17 years ago at age 59. As you know I worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week for 40 years...never missed a day, but missed lots of family affairs. If I had to do it over.....get a 5 day a week job with benefits and pension etc. The self employed have to create their own. Happy retirement Sid the 3rd! regards joel
Yes, but the rich don't teach classes Mon - Fri while traveling. :? Starting Mid-October thru the end of the year, I am doing seven weeks in Xi'an China in two trips.
Tom...that travel always sounds glamorous and it is interesting at times I'll admit.....once you get there. I was in Seattle and surrounding areas of the Puget Sound last week and the sky was clear.....and the scenery was astounding...all of it... 8) However, the flight there and back was quite long and arduous with my return flight lasting about 11 hours of actual duration from the time I left my hotel to the time I arrived back home in the Tampa area. I envy some of the places you travel but not the actual getting to and from. Ever see the movie "Up in the Air"? The first half of the movie is a riot for those of us who have traveled extensively for a living.
Truer words were never spoken. The trip across the Pacific is a ~12 hour flight on just one of the legs - Los Angeles to Tokyo (Narita Airport). :?
No... however, I have Gold status on AA (close to platinum) so I can use miles for upgrades and am eligible for free upgrades.
I was Silver on NW for about 15 years. In the older days I was upgraded frequently to First Class but by the end not so much because I usually got bumped by Gold/Platinum or there were no free upgrades. Still...at least I could go on line with that Silver status and select bulkhead and exit row seats. Even first class on a 12 hour flight would be excruciating.
You have obviously not flown 1st class on an international flight. Business class on international is actually better than 1st class flight in the states. International business seats have electric reclining seats with leg rest and the seat goes almost completely horizontal and the person behind you still can't touch the back of your seat with their feet. 1st class on international flights have angled seats that actually make into beds. In 1st class, I can sleep for quite a bit of that 12+ hour flight.
Right you are. What happens if you get stuck in coach as I did in my only transAtlantic flight 30 years ago?
My fat arse is crowded. :? So far, I have only been stuck in the middle seat on one international flight. That sucked! And now we return to our regularly scheduled programming: Congrats Sid!!!!!!!!
Thanks, guys. Joel, nice to see you back. At the top of my bucket list, now that I have all this time on my hands, is to pass Terry in number of posts. Just kidding, of course. That's an impossible task, even if I posted 24/7/365.
Sid, if you are like most of us who have retired I think you will find you don't have as much time on your hands as you think. Life can change for the better if you are the kind of guy I think you are. But congratulations and enjoy retirement.
You should set attainable goals with milestones along the way. You're only less than 700 away from me... Then ~4000 to Bill... then set your sights on Terry. 8)
