I can't believe a Notre Dame woman golfer would do this. She's a Div1 player on a major team, she knows how important honesty in reporting your score is, it's everything. All we have to do is go back to the Hertiage when that guy called a penalty on himself for brushing a reed on his backswing, it was so slight nobody but him knew it, but honesty in golf is paramount. This girl embarassed not only herself, but her family, her team and coach, and the University. If I were her coach I would for sure kick her off the team and maybe even take away her scholarship for the 2010-2011 season. I don't know exactly what conditions I would impose on her to regain my trust enough to let her back on the team but I wouldn't take her back easily. I know nothing about her, just that as I said he is no newbie to this game if she is playing at that level. It's not the ladies scramble. First of all I've played Otter Creek. And, I've had scores similar to this Brophy lady. Of course, that is her back nine scores. This is about as serious as it gets for golfers. I hope that she's not on scholarship because her folks might be taking a hit. She is a senior so she really, really should have known better. No excuses and not acceptable.
I read some of the comments about the incident, and I understand that Golfstats.com is an unoffical source and not the offical scorecard that is being kept by her playing partner so she wasn't technically cheating but still my sister will be working the golfstats for them at the Mens regional in College station this weekend and she won't be getting paid she's doing it because she loves college golf and they need volunteers. I asked her and she was appalled that some player would lie to a volunteer like this young lady did...didn't think it was funny at all.
I don't think I'd be amused either, but since it wasn't her official score it's too bad someone couldn't have asked, "wtf are you doing?" and ended it before it became necessary to suspend her. It's a hard lesson for a young women who thought she was being funny. Cheating at golf bothers me and I have no idea why. I play pretty often with a guy I really like, but he cheats like hell on his score. We don't play for money so I don't say anything. But when he hits ball in the water, tees up another and doesn't count it, or picks up his ball after a missed putt and counts it, etc. It makes me shake my head when we're at the 19th hole and he says, "well, I got you by two shots today." :roll:
