Obviously the King is the iPhone, everybody aknowledges that. But there is a lot of work going on in the iPhone killer category. The Palm Pre came out to a lot of splash, but inspite of being an excellent smart phone, it's not killing the iPhone and might not even survive.

The BlackBerry Storm was DOA, the regular BlackBerry's seem to be doing well, I have all sorts of people checking their email every moment I don't have my hands in their mouths. But it's not a great browser of the net, so at best it'll be a draw with the iPhone.

Now Google has come out with it's own phone, that it sells on it's website and it's had excellent reveiws. I'd tagged this as the one I want when it comes out in a Verizon model sometime soon.

However apparently Microsoft is not going away. It's had a Windows Mobile phone for a long time and if you needed compatability with MS applications this was the tool. But it's been sliding backwards for quite awhile now. They have however come out now with Windows 7 version for smartphones, and I have heard a lot of good stuff about it. If you own the old software you are done, MS has offically orphaned it. No Support, no upgrades, no porting of applications to the new Windows 7 devices. Probably a good thing, cut the cord, come clean don't drag old stuff into the future just to pacify those who want to bring their old stuff with them.

    Windows 7 Mobile

It looks great to me, but it's not going to be available to late in 2010 at the earliest. So I'm going for the Nexus One when Verizon starts selling them.

They are all way behind the iPhone though and probably can't catch up with regards to "apps".

I gotta tell ya, I don't care if it is or isn't an iPhone killer, I love my Palm Pre. I also have a Blackjjack II that runs Windows Mobile version 6, which is serviceable for work because it ties right into outlook but it SUX for the web. WebOS is the way to go. --posted on my Palm Pre.

    Kes,

Are you on the Sprint network? I'm considering a change. I currently have a Palm Treo and am on the Verizon network. I've read reviews of the Pre. They generally are favorable, but the knock seems to be battery life. What do you think?

Blackberrys are not equal. The 9630 I just purchased for international use has the best web browser of any Blackberry I have ever used.

Sid, word on the street is that Palm is one life support. Might want to consider that before you buy a phone.

I actually know that, Terry. I guess I was focused only on the phone and not the financial health of the manufacturer. Good point. I should know better.

Nobody has mentioned the Android OS.

I get this feeling that the future will be more web-based. Phones will use the web much more for their various apps, etc.

Android may not be the OS of the future, but I think the basic idea they have is the way things will go. Some will not like having and using the web for various data storage purposes, but in a lot of ways it makes sense.

I really like my Droid...it communicates great with such apps as google maps, google docs, google calendar, etc...even facebook and youtube. It has an incredibly good display.

Meanwhile, the OS needs a lot of fine tuning in how it handles contact lists, calendars, etc. (free market calendar apps help a bit, but they are doing stuff the OS should do, IMO.)

Actually I did, the Google Phone...ie Nexus One is an Android OS device. I have heard very good things about the Android OS, the "Droid" got great reviews from the Tech Guy aka Leo Laporte who was previously in the iPhone camp and switched to the 'Droid'.

I'm pretty sure I'm buying the Nexus One when Verizon comes out with one.

I'm using the Blackberry Curve. I'm not the most sophisticated smart phone user you will find nor are my demands that great. But it serves my business needs just fine.

    Terry,

I have to ask: Do you want the Nexus One because of its actual features or because the ad you linked shows a message from the New York Times saying: "Helping Grandpa get his tech on" 8)

I looked at the android when I upgraded my phone last month. Looked like a very sophisticated product. I guess I let prices dictate my choice. Damn those blackberry keys are not designed for folks with wide, wide fingers.

Sid - yes, I'm on Sprint. The battery life is not great but I don't expect any phone would be when running web applications. If I'm doing browsing I need to make sure I have my charger with me wherever I go. They do have an extended battery, but I like the shape of the phone as-is and don't want a big battery pack sticking out the back.

Well WebOS just got new life breathed into it with yesterdays aquisition of Palm by HP. HP has stated that it will pump a lot of money into it and use it on smartphones, slates, and netbooks.

Lots of people like Kes who bought the Pre really liked it but it just got run over by the marketing muscle of Apple and RIM. With HP behind it now, it should start to grow again and be an excellent option to the iPhone and Android devices.

    HP buys Palm

Personally I think I am going to purchase the HTC Incredible sometime in the near future.

Well I have made the leap into the smartphone world. I might have gotten an iPhone if I hadn't had to change from Verizon to AT&T. The HTC Incredile has been getting....well...incredible reviews and sold 1 million units faster than the iPhone. Biggest thing is I don't have to leave Verizon.

Of course now that I've made the leap, Apple will see that inorder to keep growing their iPhone sales they will need to make a version of it available on all carriers....or when ever HP brings out a new Palm WebOS based phone it will be cooler, or those Windows 7 phones will be to die for....and I'll be stuck in a 2 yr contract!! Oh well!! :)
