It appears that Kelly has an eye for QB's. That CMU kid Dan LeFevere is going to be drafted in the 1st couple of rounds and was recruited by Kelly and Tony Pike was way down the depth chart at UC when Kelly arrived and he was developed by Kelly and will also be drafted in the first couple of rounds. Given that as a backdrop, then it's likely that one of Rees, Hendrix and Massa is likely to develope into a excellent college QB. Some of it is no doubt a QB friendly system and that's fine, while I like to see ND QB's succeed in the NFL I like it even better if they are excellent in college. I don't think any of Mike Leach's QB's have ever made it in the NFL, drafted yes but no success stories. Yet they just keep on being successful college QB's. You could say the same thing about Oklahoma QB's, although Sam Bradford may break the mould, they have all been very productive in college but none have made it in the NFL. Also in reading tea leaves it looks like we have excellent chance with both Schwenke and Ioane.
That's excellent news. I think most of the guys we expected are all in by now but I am hoping still that maybe another suprise will fall our way. Ego Ferguson maybe, maybe not. It'll be interesting to see if Schwenke and Ioane are Irish, Schewenke seems to be really torn and possibly could even not commit today and go to Washington for a visit.
Jones to FSU, not a huge suprise. He was one of our longshots. Ferguson is the last hope for a good suprise along with the boys from Hawaii. I have no expectations that Seantrel will come to ND, it's either Ohio State or USC I'd bet. Supposedly big push by Minn late, even local media got in on it, but I couldn't see him going to Minn.
Well it's ovah! Schwenke signed with the Irish but Ioane is headed to Boise State, given all the winning that they have done lately I don't necessarily blame him but still a ND education, being a part of a revival, South Bend might not be better than Austin or L.A. but it's sure as hell is better than Boise!! Plus he now has to play on that blue carpet!! Must be the academics at Boise that attracted him!! I don't think there will be any other kids sign today. Go Irish. Not a bad class, it certainly is a better class than Charlie was able to put together taking over for Willingham, but then Charlie had 2 handicaps that Kelly didn't have, 1) he was still coaching for the Pats on Nat'l Signing day and 2) he was not left much to build on by Willingham.
ND <r>Well kind of a mixed bag for Kelly in his first class. When you compare his first class to others according to Rivals he has the 14th ranked class. Urban Meyer's first class was 15 and Saban's class was 10th. so I guess you could say he did O.K. <br/> <br/> Getting James was all Kelly. I think he would have gone to OSU if Weis was still at ND. We won't be able to see how good he is at recruiting until the next class. We do know that ND can haul in top 5 classes, Charlie Weis showed us it can still be done at ND. If Kelly has a winning season this first year, Look out!<br/> <br/> Just a thought but I really think ND/Kelly can do well recruiting in Ohio from now on especially if they do well on the field this coming season. <E>8)</E></r>
Tim.... <t>Agree and I will be real surprised if they don't have an exceptional class this time next year but what wound me up was watching the first comments out of BK's mouth today. He is focused on doing something about the talent level on defense which IMO is pretty obvious. He as emphatic about getting that done in the next class. That is how the Irish return to revelance in college football.</t>
I haven't watched the videos of Kelly and some of the recruits, but he seems to be getting a lot of positive kudo's from the fans. I have read some of the transcripts and when I read this part of one of them I have to admit I loved it. He went into his philosophy again of recruinting 3 types of players, Power, Big Skill and Skill. I won't go into his definitions but he's very clear that is how he is going to evaluate kids, and not really pay that much attention to 4* and 5* ratings. Now if he can build ND back into a Nat'l Champion contender by recruiting RKG's, I'll love it. I'd love to be back, and be back with a roster full of RKG's who are great fits for ND and take academics seriously. But I have to admit I wonder if it can be done, when the elite schools are getting loads of those 5* kids. So we'll wait and see, can Brian Kelly do it. We won't know for a year or so how it's all going to work out, maybe won't know for 3 years. I'm rooting for him, he says all the things I want to hear, but I want them to translate into big wins as well. Terry
A lot of ***** players can't get into ND academically. Paul Hornung got run out of town for saying it but we all know he is 100% correct. Kelly will have to do more with less. That's the hand he has been dealt.
In the end like any coach it'll be the winning that becomes his legacy or his rope. ND fans aren't really interested in being a better Northwestern or Standford, good at times but not consistently so, great occcassionally but only once in awhile.
Not getting your point? That is just a link to NCAA rules and regulations. Are you saying that the Louis Nix recruitment by ND is some how in violation of the rules and regulations? If so how? What are the rumours?
The two are unrelated .... the link to the rules is my sig. I was just surprised by his signing with ND, but must admit I wasn't following his recruitment after last summer. I thought he would go to Miami ... and always wondered why he didn't have interest in FSU. He's a guy with much potential but at times lacks the motivation and attitude to drive himself the way he should. If focused he will be a very good DT. Who are the D-coord and D-line coaches at ND? And what scheme will ND run on Def (front 7) ... eg 4-3 or 3-4? Also, what's the story on NwanKwo, is he contributing at ND?
We will be going to the 3-4 and as far as the coaches they are Kelly protege's Diaco is a young guy who was his DCoord last year at UC, and the DL coach is Mike Elston who also comes from UC. Nwankwo I believe has had an effort issue with the previous staff and really hasn't hardly seen the field. Maybe the new guys can pump him up and motivate him. We could use a big turn around in his career vector.
Apparently some connection between Kelly and Urban Meyer. I got this off of NDNation, there was no link to the article.
That's pretty good stuff. I think that puts a stamp on the Kelly hire as the right one for ND. I truly believe he will lead ND back to the national title chase.......he's that good.
