From the Boston Globe: Next ND Coach in a no win situation Whether you agree with the content or not, I think the writer poins out some very interesting food for thought. Don
I'm not at all a fan of Bob Ryan or Mike Lupica or any other wise-ass sportswriter, which is what Ryan is. However, the essence of his commentary - that the next ND coach has a mountainous challenge - holds water. Even he knows that his prediction of no chance for a NC is bullcrap. Even he knows that the job is not a no-win situation IF the coach wins at at least a .700 clip and contends each year for the top of the heap. What surprises me is that he gives Kentucky a break in comparison. I think Tubby Smith may have something to say about that........and Tubby won a national championship.
ND <t>As I have already mentioned, ,the whole new coach search for ND has turned into some sort of mad clusterf**k. It also give the so-called sports media(reporter/commentators) a chance to spew their anti-ND venom.<br/> Example:<br/> This morning I'm listening to Colin Cowherd(who continually shows his disdain for ND football himself) on my car radio who does a little segment called "spanning the globe" in which he brings on sports reporters from different outlets around the US to talk about hot subjects in their respective areas of the country. Well he brings on a reporter from the Ohio area who states that the HC search will probably boil down to Kelly and Edsall, fair enough so far. He also asks him if Clausen going pro has anything to do with CW being axed to which he correctly states"no Clausen was going anyway regardless of the HC status. Still O.K. so far but then, he goes on to say that the coaching job at ND just got worse(so we can assume he doesn't have much appreciation for the ND job in the first place) and that the 2nd string QB(he doesn't give his name) has a really bad torn ACL(are there any good ones) wasn't given many snaps in serious competition, wasn't let throw the ball and was a "running QB" so ND will not be any good next season. <br/> <br/> Are you serious, these are suppsose to be "serious sports reporters". The game Dayne Crist torn his ACL in he threw a frozen rope touchdown strike! (I was at the game) Anyone with an an ounce of knowledge knows that Dayne Crist was a 5* DROP-BACK QB recruit. Running QB? Please! <br/> <br/> Bottom Line: Because ND loses Clausen and Golden Tate it will be a lousy season for the Irish next year. <br/> <br/> Someone tell me I'm wrong here. I was under the impression we had more talent on hand than Clausen and Tate. We ND miss them, sure. Does that in itself equate to the assumption of a bad season for ND...no. <br/> <br/> God, these guys will jump at any chance the get to bad mouth ND.</t>
Interesting enough.. although Dayne was/is a drop back passer.. the offense they played in at HS was read zone option with an emphasis on pass..
He's an offense guy. Hopefully part of the deal will be enough money to go out and get a top notch DCoord to build a defense. If we had the Neb Defense this past year we'd be undefeated playing Alabama.
I doubt this came about in a vacuum. What I mean is that back door channels, agents whatever. If I were a betting man he would move to the top of my list. I also think that by all accounts he sounds like a good one.
Thanks for the high five Doc. That's what I'm talking about, why didn't Charlie or the AD look at what the real problem was, which by what you guys say was the Defense? Charlies Offense was working right?
In his 5 yrs. Charlie had 3 DCs. He began with Minter, replaced him with Corwin Brown and then bought in Tenuta. That was 3 strikes, and he's out.
ND <t>Terry,<br/> <br/> Well I'm hoping it is a done deal with Kelly but I'm still not sure of that. He is just right in so many ways as far as I'm concerned though. <br/> <br/> As far a D coordinator, if Swarbrick is going to hire Kelly, you would think he would tell him he needs to get the best guy available..period.<br/> <br/> It also looks like Swarbrick has either talked to already or is going to interview Harbaugh....I'll just keep my mouth shut on that one for now cause I don't want to have to eat a lot of nasty words if that were to happen.</t>
ESPN is reporting that Harbaugh "has met or will be meeting with" ND. I can't see this developing, but what do I know?
ND <t>Terry,<br/> <br/> Just thinking. If Kelly is indeed the new HC, don't you think the Rees kid would be almost perfect for Kelly's offense? My only concern with him before(Rees) was that he was in a spread type/shotgun offense. Obviously that wouldn't be a concern at all with Kelly.</t>
I think you are right about Rees, and Hendrix also plays in a spread offense a more run oriented one though, and Dayne Crist also played in the spread in HS. Kelly should have a great set of QB's when he arrives, and they will be ready to run the Irish Spread!
Terry, do you know something we don't? P.S. The Stanford AD says that Harbaugh is not a candidate. Whew!
