some games you might have missed. -La-Lafayette beat Kansas St 17-15 -Stanford choked away a game against Wake Forest LOL. -Florida State struggled to beat Jacksonville State, 19-9 with a 12 pt 4th qtr. -Northwestern escaped Eastern Michigan 27-24. -Indiana struggled with Western Michigan. -UConn snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against North Carolina. -Navy ran wild over La Tech in a much more impressive manner than Auburn did. Maybe they might not be as bad as folks think they are? That Ohio State defense looked good to me. -Maryland squeaked by James Madison..... in overtime. -Middle Tennessee State absolutely slaughtered Memphis. -SMU won again. -Missouri scraped by Bowling Green -Arizona might be better than people think.
We were off today so I got to soak it all in. Quite an entertaining day of ball. You forgot to mention how Central Michigan got a little good karma when they went for the win instead of OT against Mich St. I sure wouldn't want to be that guy that jumped offsides to allow the winning FG attempt. The Big 12 is WEAK. I joked with friends earlier this week that Ok St would lose after their "signature" win last week, and they didn't disappoint. KSU is just bad. Mizzou? Guess Illinois is pretty bad too. Tech takes 3 quarters to get going against mighty Rice. Colorado? Nuff said.
Texas took awhile to get going against Wyoming as well, maybe both teams were looking ahead to next week. I take no solice in Tech getting a slow start since on offense they still put up ridiculous numbers. They don't seem to be running the ball as well as they did last year though. Austin should be rockin' next weekend in a revenge game. I predict a big time Texas whupping of the Pirate and his minions. As far as Navy not being bad, anybody who thinks Navy is a bad team is just ignorant. Navy has been a solid football program since Paul Johnson got them turned around. Now I'm not saying that they are a top 10 team or anything but they are a team you'd better come ready to play or you'll lose. Same thing for Air Force. A
FSU actually trailed at home with only 2 - 3 minutes to go and scored those 12 points that late. That is unbelievable.
I agree.....watched a lot of great games.....more than any Sat. in recent memory. CMU-MSU, Tenn-UCLA, Mich-ND, SC-Ga and OSU-USC. Compelling games all with exciting finishes. Kudos to all who competed. My impressions are that the ACC sucks top to bottom, Ohio State is the class of the Big Ten...again...but UM has made strides, ND has likewise made strides but the BCS remains a question mark, Tenn has a very good defense and has a physical running game and will be in a bowl this year, MSU ran afoul of the MAC's best team and Qb, they play damned good football in California, the elite teams are still elite ( Bama, Texas, USC, Fla ).
Also the Georgia S. Carolina game which was on opposite Ohio State - Southern Cal, ended 41 - 37. There was a blocked extra by Georgia in the 4th quarter. S. Carolina drove to the 3 yard line with time for two plays and after moving the ball all the way down the field could not convert. If they had made the extra point they could have gone for a tie and over time. That was a great game and the reason I didn't see all the Ohio State - S. Cal game. A little SEC thing.
Have we reached the pinnacle of parity in college football. Is there actually any conference that is not deserving of playing in and for the BCS crown.??? I thought the NCAA worked hard to achieve a more uniform talent level years ago and this is what we are seeing....Just an opinion but it sure seems to me that any team can beat another at this time and I am not sure if there really are any "elite" teams. Especially if we are talking playing at an elite level for every game of the season it just doesn't happen. Well that is unless you play "Y More Tech University" every week... RC
I watched the first and fourth quarters of the CMU-MSU game to get some perspective on Arizona's win over CMU the previous week. The Chips played much better against MSU on offense, mostly it seems because LeFevour had more time to operate. The last few minutes of the game were incredible. The touchdown, the missed two point conversion. The onside kick was awesome! The drive to move the ball into FG range, the missed field goal they got to do over because of the Spartie jumping offsides, and the final field goal. I love college football.
CU's season is looking like it will be the Dan Hawkins farewell tour. If so, that will be two Boise State head coaches in a row (Dirk Koetter was the first) to flounder after moving up to a BCS team.
That's alright, the last time Tennessee played against Wyoming, it took us 5 quarters to get going. Just like it did for us against UCLA yesterday. :x
Rick, Houston Nutt has done OK for himself, although it could be said that he's floundered at times as well. He just wins and flounders all at once.
Dan Hawkins has been a failure at CU, in a spread happy conference like the B12 and playing the B12 North which has been down a little compared to the B12 South, that he would have found a home. It's tough to say but it's possible that he's made a big mistake in bringing his son with him as the QB, the kid hasn't been that good and you might figure that it inhibits QB recruiting for him as well. I mean who wants to compete against the coaches son. When Dirk started to fail at ASU, a read that well Dan Hawkins was the real brains behind the Boise State offense, now that Hawkins is failing maybe it was Chris Pederson all along! I know I read that the speculation of Pederson leaving Boise for various jobs as he's contintued the trend at Boise State, that he is going to stay at Boise tilll he can get a PAC10 job, preferably the Washington or Oregon jobs. No doubt though the failure of Koetter and Hawkins will cool the desires of many BCS Conference teams.
I see that the UCLA QB broke his jaw in the win vs Tenn. He's going to be out for 3-4 weeks. UCLA has to be the most snake bitten team in history when it comes to QB's.
