You'd think that at this time of the year the players would really be focused. I'm not sure about Alabama, but at Notre Dame the players all move into a dorm for the duration of the summer, even if they have apts somewhere. They have to live on campus. I'm pretty sure some of the staff also move in to the dorms to keep an eye on them. I'm sure partly to keep them out of trouble. Do they do that at Tenn?>
Honestly, I don't know if it is mandated these days. There is an athletic dorm (Gibbs Hall) next to the Stokley Athletic Center.
gipper, unfortunately I believe you are right. Saban signed a big class last year and the only way he can make room for them is by getting rid of players. The first report I heard just said 4 players were not invited back. I think that wonderful writer in Alabama, Finebaum, referrred to these players as deadwood. I think that once a player is in school and does what he is supposed to do they should have at least a 4 year scholarship.
Al <r>Hell they are signing 50 in every class! The dismissal of 4 is a drop in the bucket to this program! <E>8)</E></r>
Bill I seem to remember that the SEC has addressed the oversigning that was pretty common in the SEC, is that true? Limit to 28 or something like that? Terry
Terry, the SEC passed a rule limiting the number each year to 28. There is of course the NCAA limit of 25 but teams frequently over sign than gray shirt, some don't qualify and early entries can count back to the past season. But the limit of 28 is how many you can take signatures from and I'm not sure whether early entries that can count back to last year count in the 28 or not.
Just to let you guys know... Those players have actually been gone for a long time. A few of them have been gone since the end of last semester. With our new HC up at UNA, they are planning on tapping into those kids. This is just 'reported' now but it's been done for abit.. I wouldn't worry about their focus on the season at all. If you guys remember, Saban seems to oversign or obtain commits from too many kids each year. That is part of the system. He just weeds out pains in the ass or kids with discipline issues.
Bill if you can only sign 28 in Feb then those 28 will include guys who enroll early and count against the previous years class...which means to take 3 over the limit you have to either 1) be counting on at least 3 of them not qualifying or 2) at least 3 of them enrolling early and filling up what ever slots remain open in the previous class. or 3) some combination of 1 and 2. SEC schools in the past (maybe still do) used to sign guys who they knew weren't going to qualify with the intent to 1) bolster their recruiting standings and 2) hopefully get a leg up on the kid when he comes out of JUCO. Fans really get into the recuiting rankings and all of the services put weight on the number of players you sign. 2 years ago the Irish had much better "average star" ranking than Alabama but Bama had 30 or 31 players and thus more points so they were #1. Later when a bunch of them didn't qualify Rivals reranked things in Sept and we were #1, but by then everybody is focused on the next year. Bama had already scored the publicity points for #1 class.
Hell, it used to be that all sorts of criminal infractions used to result in a wrist slap or one game suspension vs a D-2 opponent. Dismissal from the team for "violating team rules" must mean being down on the depth chart.
