The Evan Berry thing is looking more and more like a jackass reporter stalking little boys at a middle school track meet. http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2009/jun/30/berrys-brother-has-long-way-to-go/
Wow he's got a twin brother? Sounds like double the fun for who ever recruits these kids if they turn out to be in the same category as Eric.
I see the Vols offered Chase Rettig at QB yesterday. I'm reading that Scroggins is likley to sign with USC. Are you Vol fans suprised that you haven't been able to get a highly ranked QB considering the opportunity at Tenn and the fact that Kiffin was once the OCoord for USC and he can point to the success of USC QB's in his tenure.
Not surprised at all. The QB position is very important to the team... obviously. CLK has no history as a head coach. It will take a season or two to easily get the players we want. It may be rough for a few years but I believe in the motivational abilities that Lane possesses. I believe that Monte will have a defense on the field that will keep us from having to score a large amount of points to win games. We have a defense. We have a defensive coaching staff. This is what I am relying on for next year. Let the quality players see what Tennessee can do with average players and we will have them knocking on our door rather than us trying to find them.
Well, just got back from the communist republic of California. I was teaching a three day class. I learned that six people from my office lost their jobs on Wednesday. 56 days and counting.
Sid, Ouch is right. One of the guys had 14 years service. One was a manager with 16 years service. I feel fortunate to still have my job. I have 9 years and 6 months. I have the lowest seniority of anyone in Austin. However, it has been that way for 8 years. The last time there was anyone lower in years of seniority was before the layoffs of 2001. These are scary times.
Tom, Aquila I see that Chase Rettig has committed to Boston College and given that Scroggins is supposedly going to commit to USC soon what are you guys going to do? No QB in the 2009 class, you can't go with out a QB in the 2010 class, are you looking at any JUCO's?
Although a top QB is a concern, we do have Stephens for one more year after Crompton graduates. Optimism will not be rampant if we don't get someone next year but we won't be too overly concerned either. I truly believe in our defense and in CLK's ability to pull them in once they see better than a 5-7 year they saw last year. Also, remember, verbals are not written in stone.
There are now rumors flying that Scroggins is leaning toward Tennessee and Rettig went to BC because of it. Rettig states that he made the decision because BC offered him first. JUCO's would also be an option. I hope to see Tennessee go back to winning it with a world beater defense and a good offense. Not the offense of late.
This came out late last night and is fueled by the rumors of Scoggins paying more attention to Tennessee: Full Article It surprises me that John Adams would write that last sentence.
I've always been amazed at the abilty of USC to stockpile players, before Emmauel Moody transfered to Fla I think they had 7 HS AA TB's on their roster. Barkley committed when Sanchez had not decided to go to the NFL and he would have had this year and next year to play, not to mention Mustain and Corp waiting in line. So he was going to compete with 4 former HS AA at QB. So Scroggins deciding to stay home and go to USC wouldn't shock me even if he had to sit for 3 years. Heck the Kansas City QB, who started all last year for the Patriots never started at USC, and there he is starting in the NFL.
Scroggins verbaled to QB rich USC, where there will be 2 young HS AA studs ahead of him on the depth chart when he arrives.
It seems amazing that a kid would go to a place where he will be buried on the depth chart and, realistically, may never see the field as opposed to a place where he would be given every opportunity to start next year but that's the behemoth that is USC. That also speaks to this kid's desire to play close to home so that his family can see him play (if he ever does). Like Tom said, verbals aren't written in stone but QBs do tend to stick by them more than the other positions. I think Tennessee will garner attention from high school QBs once they prove that Kiffin and co. can coach up a QB. Why would you go to a school coming off of a 5-7 season in which the passing game was atrocious? Not to mention the fact that the QB of said school received death threats during the season. It's a testament to the coaching staff and the university's football program that Tennessee was even a finalist for these QBs. That said, I think you'll see Tennessee show interest in former Florida QB Cam Newton as well as other top Juco QBs. They already seem to have a commitment from a community college QB named Nick Lamaison who would be eligible to play this year. Although he's not exactly going to excite the masses, the extra body would be valuable. And from what I've heard and read, the kid can play pretty well. The fact remains, Tennessee needs a top notch QB and if they don't get someone in the 2010 class, then the pressure to secure one for 2011, will be intense.
