Notre Dame is donating $5.5 million over 10 years to the surrounding communities to assist in a small way with their budget problems. It certainly is an unusual gesture by a private university.

An extraordinary gesture particularly when considering the material erosion in endowment values that all have experienced and the implicatiions for schools across the nation.....well done Irish.

Good for them. I see that they recently reached a fund raising goal earlier than anticipated, even in this down economy, so being able to share some of their good fortune with the surrounding communities is good for both parties. The University needs good relations with the surrounding communities and the communities need the support of the University.
