Longhorns are the top national seed. 8 B12 teams in total in the tournament...seems a like a lot but we are a pretty good league. Other National Seeds CSU, ASU and UCI from the West Coast OU from B12 LSU and Fla from the SEC. UNC from the ACC. And we're off to Omaha!
Vandy and LSU looked heads and tails better than everyone else in the SEC tourney. I was shocked to see that Vandy finished 8th in the conference. They are awfully good. LSU is just a machine at the moment and they are a dangerous tourney team. How about UCI? I wonder which team west of the rockies will get the shaft this year..
Well all three Western teams who are national seeds are getting to play at home for the Regionals, and if they win they usually get the Super Regionals at their place as well don't they?
I am just getting around to the brackets today. The brackets so far seem fair but I haven't seen how they play into the next round. Only 2 brackets seem unfair at this point. The Irvine and the Tallahassee brackets look a bit nuts.
There wasn't a regional north of Louisville, was there? Guess it wasn't a good year for our cold weather friends. The Aggies came apart this year. Some key injuries, and pitching that didn't come back to last year's level combined with much lower run production will do that to you. And I had such high hopes...
LOL nah That region is just tough. 4 good teams lumped in together. I could see any of those clubs winning it including Marist. Here's the pairings:
Ugh... what a predicament. The two teams I despise most have made it to the final... I can only hope a meteor comes down and destroys Omaha. Ok... I'm kidding. If the meteor could just take out Rosenblatt, I'd be OK. 8)
What a game! I could not stay up beyond the 9th because I get up early in the am, but my wife watched it to the end. I wonder if Mainieri regrets putting in the 5'6" freshman who had absolutely no patiience at the plate and hurt their chances to score a couple of times when I was watching. I see that the LSU CF drove in the winning run with 2 outs after the leadoff hitter stole 2nd with 2 outs and went to third on a C error. Earlier in the game it looked like the CF would have to leave with cramping due to the heat, but they gave him an IV that kept him going. Great stuff! I don't care much for either program, but I'm a big fan of Mainieri because of what he did for ND's program in the years he was there. So I guess I hope LSU wins. Sorry, Terry.
Hey what did you guys think of the discussion of "substances" that you can use to give you a better grip on the ball "legally". Oral Herscheirser said when he was a pitcher he would chew sugar gum because it made his saliava more sticky and he could rub that on his fingers to give him a better grip and also that certain hair gels could also do the same thing. Urban Myth or the truth?
That was a great couple of minutes. I don't doubt that it's true. I mean, what the heck, Orel has that All-American boy look. Would he lie? What do you think of his description of how he got his home team ballboy to arrange the balls pregame so that he would the dark ones and the opposing pitcher would get the light ones? I thought it was a fun commentary that fed the already rich lore surrounding the history of what pitchers will do to gain an advantage.
OK now the dark ball/light ball thing I have a hard time believing. Plus do they change balls between innings? I mean if the pitcher in the top of the 1st goes 1-2-3 and out then doesn't the home team pitcher get that same ball to start the bottom of the 1st?
not always, he can ask for a new ball at just about any time. if you do so too often, you will draw the umpire's ire though.
On to game three...many Texas fans feel like it's advantage Texas the LSU 3rd starter is a significant drop off from 1 and 2 and Texas #3 is better....we'll see. Kind of interesting how the weather worked yesterday. Before the rain it was 100+ degrees, but after the 2 hr rain delay the temp dropped to 82....for both teams of course. Doubt if the Texas pitcher Jungman could have gone 9 innings in that heat.
I'm excited for Dave Grewe, the "Associate" Head coach of LSU. He not only once coached for ND, and was the head coach at MSU, but also played HS basketball with Commish.
