Crashed his pickup truck in the early morning hours (pre-6 AM).

A guy with a wealth of talent and good career stats (3.03 ERA, 90+ saves) but who could not rid himself of his demons. He got seven chances to clean up his act before he was done for good. It wouldn't happen today in the current environment.

It's a tragedy no matter how you look at it. I hope the post mortem tox screen is clean.

Howe was killed out on the San Bernardino Freeway (I-10) near Indio. He was on his way back to Orange County from a business meeting in Arizona. He was 48.

Here in SoCal, the reaction is genuine grief from those who knew him, from former teammates like Mike Soscia, to coaches like Tommy Lasorda, to Vin Scully: everyone really loved Steve Howe. He was a nice guy whose ONLY enemy was himself...

    ..................RIP......JO'Co

It's always a shame with somebody with tremendous talent allows himself to be waylaid by drugs, alcohol or other substances.

He was ejected from his vehicle because he wasn't wearing his seat belt. Sometimes when you break the rules it's for keeps.

    I

<t>will say this about Steve Howe:

growing up as a kid in the late 70s/early80s, my grandfather had Dodger season tickets that we were lucky enough to use fairly often.

In that day and age of mediocre prima donna a-holes who were too good to sign a baseball for a little kid, Steve Howe never once turned me down. (insert joke here about endless energy supply due to extra-curricular activities off the field). For whatever the reason, ever MLB great of that day and age turned me down at one point or another. All except Steve Howe.

Sometimes a flawed character can still be a good man. I always rooted for Steve Howe, even when he was a Yankee, and I always will. It appears that, once again, he was his own undoing. That's too bad. This time, he really wont get another chance. I'll miss the guy. He never once let me down as a little kid (insert additional random joke about Howe not knowing how to say 'no' here), but to a little kid that can mean a whole lot.

RIP lefty</t>
