This column dated 2/4/09 in BYUNewsNet defends Te'o's choice of colleges. In doing so the writer, Matt Payne, reveals that some members of the Church of Latter Day Saints ("LDS") are criticizing him as not being true to his faith. It's an interesting (short) read for ND fans.

    Well reasoned article.

I am suprised however that Te'o has recieved any backlash. I know you can find Mormon players on a lot of schools rosters that are not named BYU. Ben Olsen a highly rated QB in HS did chose BYU years ago but after attending 1 year and going on his mission he decided to transfer to UCLA. Given his injury prone nature, I'm sure the proximity of the prestigous UCLA medical center was a big factor in his decision.

Also on another level he is payment on the debt BYU owes Notre Dame for Jim McMahon's attending BYU over Notre Dame years ago. Jim was Catholic...of course ND didn't recruit Jim but still........

I think the only reason we have an interest in this kind of "issue" is because he is coming to ND. I'll bet Olsen caught flack the same way. I just thought it was worth mentioning.

<t>I think it's petty for anyone to criticize him on issues of faith. He will be able to attend LDS services at SB and as far as I'm concerned represent himself and his faith on a much bigger stage than BYU could ever hope to offer him. <br/>

The kid wants to go to ND and he and his family feels comfortable with the school and the staff. He is going to receive a quality education and if he is as good as advertised, have a chance to make it to the next level in football. What could be wrong with all that?</t>
