Saw this movie tonight. Clint's character, Walt Kowalski (sp?), is an aging Korean War veteran who must overcome his prejudice dealing with his long time neighborhood being populated predominately by Asian people. I could see my step father taking the exact same actions that Walt took in this movie. The whole theater was laughing at Eastwood's antics through 75% of the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
I liked the movie a lot. I saw that even though it's wildly popular with the public it won't get a nod for best picture because the tooty, fruity, politically correct people who vote were horrified by the racial slurs. But Stu's right it's the retired Dirty Harry.
Here is a trailer that lays out in a couple of minutes what the whole movie is about without ruining it for anyone: Gran Torino trailer
Movie was filmed here in the Detroit area. Many scenes were filmed in the Gross Pointe area where MCG lives.
After reading the foregoing comments, I decided I wanted to see the movie. I saw it last night. First time in many years I've gone to a movie theatre. Great experience. Great movie.
You know Sid, I very rarely rave about a movie. I might go to three or four per year. This movie hit home. Not only could I see my step father living the life of Walt Kowalski, but I could see myself being the exact same way in about 22 years. This may scare a few people, especially my wife. I won't say any more to keep from ruining the movie for all. I'll comment more =in a few months when everyone has had a chance to go see it.
Tom, after seeing the movie last night, I woke up this morning replaying it in my head. I was moved by the fact that I also identified with Walt in some ways. I'm guessing that most guys beyond the age of 35-40 may feel the same, although they may identify with him in different ways. That would attest to Clint Eastwood's ability to portray Walt as a kind of "everyman". I agree that it would be cool to discuss the movie after some time has passed and everyone has had a chance to see it.
You guys are killing me. I am dying to see this but can't break free to do so for at least another week.. You have sold me on it though
