The other topic was getting way to long and there was quite a bit of thread drift. So what are you Gators hearing about Jawanza Starling? He's at ND now with his parents, which is always a good sign that there is real interest. Many at ND feel we have a shot with him.
Terry, I see Starling listed as one of our prospects but don't see a lot of chatter about him one way or the other. I'm not sure when or if he's coming for a visit, but I'll keep my eyes and ears open.
Terry, I looked him up in the ESPN 250. According to them he's considering FSU, Georgia, LSU, USC and Notre Dame. I didn't see Florida on his list. Scout has him with the above plus Florida and Stanford. Rivals adds a few others, Oregon, Cal, S. Carolina, with Georgia and FSU on top.
Tyler Gaffney is also a ND-Stanford battle. Weis wants him for FB and Stanford will play him as the TB in a 1 back offense. Which would you rather do, FB in the Weis offense or actually touch the ball in the Stanford offense? I doubt if we win that battle. Starling though is another story, we could win a Stanford - ND battle based on football. Our defense is on the rise and the way our safeties play they are being prepared for the NFL.
Bill according to what I've read he's didn't take any offical visits till after his football season was over, and he's not narrowed things down. He says at least 5 teams are in the hunt. ND is one of them and so is UF, but if UF is only mildly interested in him as a plan B then that is good for us.
I don't think UF has Starling as a b-list, I think it's more of the staff likes Evans overall athleticism and speed just a bit more .... and see him as being more flexible at DB than Starling, who's a safety. I believe UF views Evans as having the ability to flex between free safety, nickle, and even some corner, if needed. In some regards, I think they see Frankie Telfort in the same light ... speed and the ability to move bewteen SS and Will.
Here's an awesome article on recruiting. State of Recruiting Lot's of good stuff, some interesting charts and maps as well. They make an observation on the population shift to the South/Southeast/Southwest and it's impact on recruiting. Also impact on teams like Neb, Notre Dame, and Michigan who have traditionally recrutied nationally. Terry
Terry, Re Gaffney... Going to Stanford for PT at TB would be risky for him. Harbaugh has had one foot out the door there at Stanford for the past year. The only reason that kid figures to be a TB or single-back is within the design of Harbaugh's offense that rotates a power back in the game regularly... If he goes, that kid is a FB.
I see that JoePa just gave Jelani Jenkins best friend a scholarship, Mike Wallace a DB. He stole Mike away from such programs as , New Mexico, Stanford, Army, Maine, New Hampshire and Towson University. You don't think Mike got the scholarship as an inducement to Jelani do you? 8) 8)
Saw that. I believe Meyer had his "in home" with Jenkins, last night. Hopefully, one of the Gator sites will have an update, soon.
According to some Gator fans who follow recruiting Starling is still on the Gator short list for the last five spots in this recruiting class.
USC's Byron Moore decommits and it is now an ND/LSU race? http://wearesc.com/news/story.php?article=1793
The Gators lost a supposed life long fan in Greg Reid also. He was committed since last year right after signing today until the all star games a couple of weeks ago. Now he's not only decommitted but eliminated the Gators all together. He had attended 4 - 5 games on his own during the season and was a life long Gator fan. Now he's history. Go figure. But like I've always said, until the day they sign the kids have a right to change. Good luck with Moore.
