Not so fast my friend......not tonight in the Sugar Bowl. Utah and the Mountain West have my vote. I wouldn't mind if these guys got the AP vote for the NC. They lost no games this season and tonight they outmuscled and looked faster than the Crimson Tide. Brian Johnson outplayed John PW by a country mile. I almost think Bama peaked in the Auburn and Florida games after a great game vs. Georgia earlier in the year. Otherwise the Tide looked beatable several weekends and tonight they showed that side of their game once again although you cannot take anything away from the Utes. They were extremely impressive and deserve to be 13-0.
Very impressive win for the Utes. I think the Mtn West is proving that they are a conference that deserves a seat at the table. To me at least they are a better conference than the Big East and probably on par with the ACC.
There are those that would say: "If the Utes had to play an (insert BCS conference name here) schedule week in and week out, they wouldn't have gone undefeated." BS! The Utah team I saw tonight believed. They believed in themselves and couldn't care less what anyone on the outside thought. They were on a mission and they were not distracted. To me, all this talk of a possible split national championship better have the Utes included. That was amazing.
So let's recap, the PAC isn't that good because they couldn't handle teams from the Mountain West Conf. So who can? Last year they were 4-1 in bowls. As they say about the PGA...."These guys are good."
Don't forget TCU took out undefeated Boise State this year in the Poinsetta Bowl ( I think). Mtn West has become a very good conference. Utah, BYU, TCU and USAFA consistently are good programs. Col State is a little down right now but they were pretty good under that old Miami coach.
Gip, The only real conclusion that anyone can draw here is that the BCS does not work. The only real time that there was not a dispute was the very first BCS champion!   It is time for there to be a revolution and scrap the system in favor of a playoff. It does not have to be a perfect playoff system. It only has to be good and "tweak" it each year like they have tried to do with the BCS. It should include any team that goes undefeated UNLESS they schedule a non-Div 1A school. If that happens, they should have to rely on their AP/Coaches and maybe the computer rankings to get them in. Let's start with 8 teams and see how it works. All undefeated teams with the above exception and then fill the remaining slots with the teams with the highest rankings. Screw the conference champions. If they win a conference and still are ranked lower than another of their conference teams, they're outta here. Oh well, just ramblings due to the meds for a bad shoulder and can't sleep.
Well said Gipper. The reason you don't hear me honking the Pac10 #1 horn this year due to the 5-0 bowl record is because I honestly believe this was a rebuilding year in the Pac10. They should be much, much better next season and the bottom of the conference was a flat out joke. Washington had some talent, but they were led by the Tytanic. Wazzu blew... Arizona State crumbled. After that, things started to get respectable.. I felt the Mountain West had a much better year, IMHO. Welcome to the dark side Tom. We have cookies and hooters girls
Outbound, Agreed. That is the whole point. Just like in every other college sport, there is no argument after the tournaments. Either you win and move on or you don't.
Just so long as you're selected for the playoff. Even a playoff may never be perfect, but excluding a conference out of hand is just short-sighted.
If you took the top eight in the BCS standings and started with them you would just about get all of the real candidates. If you took the top 16 that would probably be the equivalent of the the 65 teams in the basketball tournament.
I think they need to restructure the regular season and take the top 16 for a playoff. No real contender will be left out and it would allow for teams like Boise State, Utah, C-USA champ, ND, etc to all have legitimate shots without having to do away with automatic bids for BCS level conference championships....which if they did would be a non-starter politically for the commissioners of the major conferences and kill the playoff.
At this point we shouldn't let "perfection" get in the way of "good enough". If we started with the top eight, then the PAC10, Big 10, SEC, Big 12, MWC, would all have been included, right? If you take the top 16 it gets even better.
