Usually in the bowl season you can get a sneak peek at the BCS/New Years games by taking note of what has already happened in the bowl season up to that point. While we have yet to see any SEC teams in action in two games the Big 12 teams gave up a combined 940 yards of offense and 65 points. One lost ( OkSt) and one went to OT to pull out the win ( Mo). Of course I am hopeful this is a trend....
The trend where Oklahoma mimics the OKST loss or the trend where Oklahoma mimics the Mo win in overtime. I know... I know... You just left the door open and I couldn't resist walking in. 8)
Of course I am talking about the 470 yards average of offense given up...and the 32.5 ppg. I have openly questioned the defense in the Big 12....as have many members of the media. The two teams the Big 12 has faced in the bowls are pretty good offenses but still.....not that much defense offered up in general so far. Just something to keep an eye on..... 8)
From CFN: "Now that Oklahoma State and Texas Tech have lost to Oregon and Ole Miss, respectively, get ready to hear that the Big 12 South is a poser over the next 72 hours. Texas will have a chance to add some sanity to the discussion in Monday’s Fiesta Bowl, but if they happen to lose to Ohio State, look out. The anti-Big 12 South rhetoric will reach a fever pitch, with the underlying message being that Oklahoma will get exposed by Florida in Miami." Not ready to say they are a poser but like when Michigan lost 41-38 to OSU in 2006 and yet clamored loudly for a rematch ( had to wonder about that....gave up 41 points ) I think Texas needs a good defensive performance vs. OSU to stem the anti-Big 12 South sentiment that seems to be rising. Of course....Oklahoma could have a lot to say about that as well.
Tom, I agree 100%. This is a BCS nightmare now. Aside from club membership, a case cannot be made for the 2 teams playing in the illegitimate title game.
I can not remember so many upsets in the post season bowls! I do not think anyone is safe at this point. Don
Here is where we part ways... I think a case can be made for Utah....to join the two playing for the title along with Texas and USC. However....the system we have, with points tallied by voters and computers will annoint the winner on Thurs. and that team will claim the BCS title and deservingly so based on the BCS system we have. However, I think Utah deserves the AP title. Even a plus one this year wouldn't silence all of the title wannabes and most years that's not so much......but it is this year.
Dave, we don't really part ways. i agree that it is hard to punish florida or oklahoma... at the same time, it is a system that unfairly punishes Utah... who proved it on the field they are #1.
