McCoy announces he's coming back for his senior season. I hope the Gators are as lucky. McCoy Coming Back
What? Nobody cares that one of the best QB's in the country is coming back? I hope the Gators get similar news later on.
Nope, don't care Bill. He only did this because he checked the schedule and saw that he doesn't have to deal with the Blackshirts again next year. Wussy.
I went to bed early last night. But this is good news for Texas. This means not only do we get to see him play another year, but we get an orderly transition at QB. You see behind Colt, there is nada. John Chiles is not a QB, he's an exciting player for sure....you know fast, mecurial, etc. But an every down QB, I don't think we'd be very good on offense with him. But we have a guy comming in at QB next year named Garret Gilbert. This kid is the real deal as a QB, fast for a white boy, strong arm, already runs a similar offense to what UT runs, but he'll need a year of seasoning before he's thrown in as the starter. So he gets to sit and learn and hopefully get a few snaps here and there before taking over as a soph at QB. I like Colt a lot as a QB, he's really had a great year. But I'm not sure he's an NFL QB. He's accurate, has a strong enough arm I believe, but not many Spread QB's have made a quick transition to the NFL. Matt Ryan was not a Spread QB in college which is why he's been able to make a fast transition. I actually doubt if another year in college will change things much for Colt though. But I'm glad he's comming back.
I really don't expect you Gator fans to have to worry too much about Tebow going pro, unfortunately. Although I like watching the guy play, I'm sick of watching him play against Tennessee who can never seem to stop him from running or throwing the ball. That said, I think he will come back after he checks out where scouts think he'll be drafted. Speaking of that, in the latest Sporting News magazine, there is a list of the top 99 draft prospects for the upcoming draft including juniors and Tebow was nowhere to be found. I was a bit shocked. I hope the guy has a great NFL career as a QB but it's looking like he may have to be willing to change positions in the pros. I hope he decides to go pro early anyway though.
Most QB's who change positions as Pro's move to reciever. Most of the black guys go to WR, that's where Pat White is likely to go. Arnaz Battle former ND QB went to WR as did Carlyle Holiday another former ND QB. I can't think of the kids name but Rice had a QB be very successful as a WR and I think IU also has a former QB at WR something -el. Matt Jones of Ark went to WR as well. Somehow I don't see Tebow as WR, the kid is tough as nails. I do think he'll play QB and not be asked to move to another position right away. He's tough, mobile, dedicated, strong arm all the things you need for QB. I think I would like him as a Texan and give him a few years to make the transition, rather than try and start him right off the bat. That's what happens to 1st rnd qBs with big bonues they almost always have to be starters as rookies ready or not. He'd be well served to be a backup for a couple of years and get used to being under center, reading defenses, getting his footwork down, stuff like that.
A couple of mornings ago on Mike and Mike, NFL daft/college talent commentator Todd McShay analyzed Tebow's potential in the NFL draft. MsShay said the "consensus" was that he does not have the long range passing accuracy to go high in the draft as a QB, and his running ability in college does not translate as a QB skill in the NFL. McShay speculated that he might convert to a tight end and/or H back, which would require a learning period. McShay further opined that he would do well to enjoy the college experience for one more year because he would not make enough $ to justify coming out early. Tebow could be only the second 2-time Heisman winner. If he comes back in 2009 he could be the first 3-time winner. If I'm a FL fan, I'm very happy that he does not have the incentive to leave early for the NFL draft. We've talked about this many times. There is a long list of Heisman Trophy winners - great college players - who either did not make it in the NFL or made it but did not have great NFL careers. College vs. NFL - two different worlds.
I sure hope Tebow comes back and am not so sure he won't be successful in the NFL. Corey's analysis of Tebow, his arm was strong enough but he doesn't make the short throws all that well was interesting to me. If I remember right that the short version of Corey's analysis. So Tebow is starting from a position of being smart enough and throwing a good long ball. The concern would be two fold, can he throw the short ball and will he get injured running the ball. Mike and Mike made a different analysis of his long ball. No matter to me other than I would love to see him successful in the NFL for his own sake. I don't watch the NFL that much but would likely watch it more if TT was a successful QB. But at the college level he is very successful. I hope the Gators are as lucky as Texas. There is one difference though we do have a very good player in waiting, John Brantley.
His long ball is nice for college. He puts some air under it and lets the WR run under it. He can't let the ball hang that long in the NFL.' When he tries to throw over 20 yards on a rope, he throws a lot of worm burners.
