One thing he is right about, is that the disparity of black head coaches in Football is embarrassing. There are going to be quite a few jobs filled in the next month. Want to venture how many will even interview a black guy? I'm not sure what the solution is myself. Maybe there needs to be a agressive program to recruit more black guys to be coaches in the first place, and then maybe more will gravitate up the ranks to Coordinators. Jim Strong the Fla DCoord has a wealth of experience, should get a job as a HC. I wonder if he will even get an interview.
How many interview? How many have the experience needed? I know that, due to past problems with this issue, most good young black coaches went to the NFL and stayed there. Now since other coaches have struggled with the NFL to NCAA transition, that issue is used to cover those who may be interested. I am not for simply hiring a coach because he is black. Hiring a coach because of his race is no better than not hiring him for that same reason.
I agree with that as well. It just seems like no progress has been made to develope black coaches at the collegiate level. It's funny, that it's not a problem in basketball either at the college or Pro level.
Well, I may be fired upon for this but it's not like I have a virgin bow. It is my opinion that if we have a black man in office as the President of the United States, that proves one thing to me: It is no longer prejudice that is keeping the black man down, it is his effort to make something of himself. To hell with affirmative action at all levels! It is time to treat all men/women as equals in every respect.
Tom. Agreed. Terry, Charlie Weis may be the most hated coach in all of college sports... And he has 2 black coordinators... Nary a mention of it. Charlie Strong at Florida figures to be a strong HC candidate, but you hear ESPN clamor for Jimbo Fisher, Bud Foster and Steve Sarkisian.... I'm just saying....
Here is a true story you may find interesting. While in LA this week I sat in a bar near my hotel and next to me was a very hot lady who was supposedly being escorted at the bar by her boyfriend's brother who was a tall...very athletic looking black man in his early 20s. He states that he was a 3 year starter at Washington and played for coach Ty and graduated last year. When I asked how he liked him he said he didn't really like the guy too much because he "made the players go to class"..... He says that Pete Carroll is supposed be more of a players coach and that he should have stayed home in LA and played for him. He was recruited by Neuheisel so maybe we get the idea of how Rick N is as well because this guy seems to like that kind of coach.
I have no doubt that some players shy away from situations where they will have to go to class, be responsible for their actions in a meaningful way, etc. I remember a certain FSU Running Back...cough Lo Booker, cough... who turned down Notre Dame because Willingham told him that the ebonics he favored would need to go and he would have to go to class. Bobbah Bowden on the other hand promised him he could be the next Peter Warrick, he however was never caught stealing from a department store, so he failed to live up to the promise.
