Lol...the old guy just won't quit! I hear he no longer can remember current players names, just guys from years ago. If the guy wears Kerry Collins old number that's who he is, " hey Kinjina Carter hold on to that ball"!! Word is that when he has the head sets on in the booth he's really listening to the PSU play by play on radio to keep up with the game.   BTW that big PSU crowd at pep rally??? What's that all about, I've never been to a ND pep rally that was less than a full house at the basketball arena and that's about 10K fans. PSU is a bigger school, with a bigger stadium, and more alumni....don't they care?  JoePa won't quit BTW you heard it hear first. PSU will beat MSU tomorrow because it's a home game for PSU, MSU is a good but a one dimensional team. But PSU will get slaughtered in their return match with Oregon State in the Rose Bowl and if it's USC they will get murdered. JoePa will have that dazed look on the sideline.
   We've seen that movie before and we know how it ends......that was an ugly beat down TOK and the Nits were playing without several of their DL. I'm sure the Beavs don't want any part of that rerun..... They are still the best one loss team out there imho....they for sure have the most impressive quality win of any in the mix because it was the only one on the road.....you're vastly underestimating these kids. The only other team to come into C'bus and eke out a victory under the lights against a very good football team was also pretty good, as I recall! 8)
ohhh I don't know about that. People seem to forget that Oregon State started the season throwing the ball 50+times a game, their TB was not 'the Quizz' and they were doing a lot of things differently. I believe at the time, I said they are a team that wants to have the power running game but they just don't have the back. That is historically what Mike Riley likes to do.. They started the year by losing to Stanford, Penn State and Utah. Since changing up the roles of certain players (eg moving Quizz to tailback and using his brother as more of a wing back), they have become a much different team. They are a young team that has gotten much better as the year goes on. To say that they stood no chance against Penn State is like saying they'd stand no chance against Stanford. Penn State is a very, very good team and at times play with great momentum at home. I'm sure Penn State wouldn't be afraid fo them, but I also think that is a much different ball game (even in Happy Valley) if they play it today.
Hey picking up Quizz and Donald Brown of U Conn after the start of the season was a major reason for my team doing well in our Fantasy league. With Ringer off they were my two running backs in the Championship game. I'm not buying Penn State as that strong and think Corey is right that the other OSU might give them all they can handle in the Rose Bowl if they meet there.
Whoever represents the Big 10 in the Rose Bowl is going to have all they can handle with whoever represents the Pac 10.
Well pot shots at JoePa aside. PSU is a good team, but I think it's very difficult for them to play a rematch against a team that they beat handily early in the season. The motivation is all with Oregon State, plus as Corey has pointed out this isn't the same team. The Quizz is a legitimate D1 TB, he's having a great year and so is his brother. The OSU defense is also much improved. I think the Beavers will handle them easily. Now USC if they end up there has so much more talent than PSU that they will beat them like a red headed step child. They will be highly motivated to show the USA that their BCS ranking is way too low. Terry
I guess I just don't have as good an imagination as you guys...... I just can't pretend that that game between PSU/Beavs didn't happen and was not the total destruction that it was.....I tried. I can't do it! The Nits were up 35-7 at the half with as I recall, several of their starting Dlineman suspended still from "weedgate". The "Quizz" did play and rushed for 99 of their 102 yds or so.....Joe called off the dogs early or could have named the score......the final 45-14 but it wasn't that close. Based upon what happened on the field between those two teams already, that indeed takes quite a vivid imagination to believe such fantasy! Granted it was in Happy Valley and travel to/fro the coast is a big deal but......it would take a transformation of epic proportions to turn that game around.....the spread HD was still in its formative stages, Clarke was still a relatively inexperienced QB etc, etc, etc..... TOK, reSU/USC.....let 'em play the game. If they can beat us at night in Columbus, with as much as what was at stake in that game for both teams, they can play with anybody, anywhere.
There was a point in time this year in which Cal manhandled Michigan State. Ohio State, IMHO, is a much better team now than they were a month ago simply because TP is really starting to get his feet at this level. I think Oregon State has much improved. Would they beat Penn State now?? Who know. I think it might be a different game. Perhaps Oregon knocks off Oregon State in the civil war to spare Penn State the indignity of having to play the low hanging fruit of the Pac10 so they could secure a more 'worthy' opponent such as USC... who lost to Oregon State.
I know that Cal beat 'em 38-31 on the coast, did they play again? From what I recall, that one was a pretty entertaining game.....sorry I must have missed the one you are referring to....! Corey, don't misunderstand, I don't think the Beavs are unworthy at all, indeed I think they are a fine squad. I'm just responding to seemingly unreasonable notion that the Beavs would "handle them easily" after having gotten their a$$es kicked earlier in the season.....there is no doubt in my mind that the game would be a better contest than the one played earlier....imho, PSU is a lot better than they are getting credit for and indeed they have evidenced as such on the field save one misstep on the road at the gun against what is now a much improved Hawkeye squad........
Cal led 10-0 before Longshore threw a pick 6 for Michigan State's first TD. In fact, it was like Tedford kept putting Longshore back in as some sort of 'equalizer' to bring Michigan State back into the game. I remember Javon Ringer being held to 81 yards rushing in that game. Your overall point is taken, the only thing that matters is the scoreboard and that indicates a 7 point game. I'm with you in that you can't discount what Penn State did to them. I just don't think you can say that: 1) The two teams are the 'same' as they were back then 2) Penn State is the same team away from home as they are at home. 3) the style of play and the way they are used (Oregon State) is anything like it was at Penn State. I remember watching a FoxSports special on Oregon State before the USC game in which the segment centered on the premise that 'would Oregon St change up its plan of attack and put the team on the shoulders of a freshman'... The first 3 or 4 games, the team relied HEAVILY on that really average QB then have (Moaveao or something like that?!?!?) For the record- I see people referring to Oregon State's 'less than impressive' win over a much better than you think Arizona team... Did anyone realize that Oregon State played that game without its starting QB and Jacquizz Rodgers??? Sheet, if an SEC had done that...someone would have built a memorial wall dedicated to the occasion.
Agreed on all points....including the SEC memorial! I would be thrilled to see an SC/PSU match-up for more than one reason.....if not mistaken, I think that would be our best shot at getting an at-large BCS bid.
Well that PSU/Oregon State game was so long a go that it's almost irrelvant to the discussion. Oregon State is a much improved team, will have the motivational advantage in the rematch and will have PSU traveling across the country. See what happened to the PSU offense when it went to Columbus, when it had to go as far as Iowa City it didn't make it past Columbus. If they go all the way to Pasadena, I don't think they will play well at all. But it's all conjecture. Let'em play. As far as PSU vs USC...oh my god what a mismatch, again just conjecture on my part. Terry
I watched Paterno's post game press conference and anyone who thinks he is a senile old man in need of a nurse to change his underwear does not have a clue. It was a hoot watching him toy yesterday with reporters, most of them probably 40-60 years younger than Joe. The guy is a marvel. Several years ago, it looked like Penn State had hit the skids and more than a few posters here, including myself, thought he needed to step down. Our sage wisdom proved a little faulty considering how well his team has done in recent years compared with the performance of other coaches who were touted, at the time they were hired, as young men of brilliance, ready to lead their team to a return to the glories of the past.
Corey, Actually alot of the things you are saying about Oregon State are the same things being said about Ole Miss. :?
PSU's record is a tribute to the way the staff, led by DCoord Tom Bradley, has covered up for Joe. He is the Chairman of the board emeritus. For example, Jif was a successful businessman. He owned multiple fast food franchises. He worked very hard. No doubt even today he would have something to contribute. But even he admits that he couldn't run those businesses today, it takes more energy than he has. If he had top managers to run things for him, he could come in and check on things and offer up opinions but not have the same role he did as a young man. That's the position JoePa is in, and since PSU and his staff are OK with that he can continue as long as he is able to make it to the stadium.
