1. Well Texas Tech vs UT game turned out to be a barn burner, I still can't believe that Harrell made that throw and they scored. With 8 secs left I figured they would just try to get some more yardage for the FG attempt. That's all they needed to win. But if the UT guys make the tackle on Crabtree it's game over they never would have got the kick off. But a great play, one that reminds me of a play at A&M where they stuck it in the endzone with no time left on the clock from 50 yds out. 2. I now think that no B12 team will go undefeated. Tech had to have pretty much every break go their way to beat Texas in front of a rabid crowd, I mean for a crowd of 60K that was a very hostile atmosphere. But I can't see all that happening when Tech goes to OU. I think this benefits Texas as I don't see us losing to Baylor, A&M at home or Kansas so we will be a 1 loss team and unless we get into a tie break situation where Tech, OU and Texas have 1 loss we will win the B12 South and play for the B12 Championship. I don't know what the tie breaker is for a 3 way 3. Gators and Bama are clearly the class of the SEC and destined to meet in the SECCG. That should be a great game, the unmoveable object (Bama defense) vs the irresistable force (Gator offense). 4. ACC continues to be a mess with who knows which team or teams will be in the ACC championship game. Ga.Tech beat FSU just when FSU looked like maybe they were making noise. Instead Maryland and GaTech are temporarily in the lead. Maryland looked dead in the water after the first couple of games this season. I'm both suprised and not suprised that Paul Johnson is doing well at Ga.Tech, mainly I thought it would take him a couple of years to right the ship so to speak. Miami is currently very hot as well. 5. At the moment USC seems to be having a hard time gaining any traction in the polls. I know the Pac10 is down this year and that has something to do with it, but USC has been a pollster favorite since Pete arrived at USC. So I'm suprised that they aren't ranked higher than they are, esp to see them slip below a 1 loss Okie State team. I doubt if Pete would have recruited a single player that Okie State has on their team. 6. Heisman race is heating up, Colt McCoy's comeback in the 2nd half can't have hurt him, but Graham Harrells last drive has bound to have helped him tremendously and Tim Tebow who continues to just be the catalyst for the UF offense without generating the mind blowing stats that he did last year is still lurking out there. Sam Bradford still hanging around but I think we can count out Chase Daniel I don't think any RB this year will even make it to NY. 7. Meechigan offically out of bowl contention. 2-7 and staring at a very possible 2-10 season. Nobody would have expected that this year. 8. Big East could easily not have a team in the top 25 yet have a guaranteed bowl bid. Reason? Top 4 teams are WVA, Pitt, Cincy, UConn...and they have 4 games left and they mostly play each other. Given that WVA at #20 is the highest ranked team it's very possible that those teams could each go 2-2 to finish the season leaving the BE with no ranked teams. This year they should award the automatic bid to the Mtn West winner. 9. Of course the Mtn. West very well could earn their way into the BCS bowls with their efforts on the field they have Utah, TCU and BYU all ranked above the BE teams. Utah still has to play TCU and BYU both very good teams. 10. Boise State is a slam dunk for another BCS bid, they are very unlikely to lose another game, they nobody left to play who is even remotely a decent team except for Fresno State who is not that good this year, not horrible but not likely to beat Boise on the Blue Carpet late in the season when the game time temp is likely to be below 32 degrees not the balmy weather they will leave in the valley. 11. Irish: If we can get by BC, Navy and Syracuse then we'll be heading for a minor bowl some place out west, Pheonix or El Paso. The loss to Pitt killed our Gator Bowl or Cotton Bowl chances, unless a miracle occurs and we beat USC. 12. Scotts Ags are looking pretty tough right now. That was a great win over Colorado for them, not because Col is a great team they aren't and Hawkins has even demoted his son to 2nd string QB. But still from where Scott was looking after the 3 game streak that ended with the Tech loss they have improved a bunch and maybe that light at the end of the tunnel isn't a train!! Of course still having to face OU and Texas isn't likely to end well for the Ags but there is a spark there. 13. Basketball season starts soon, exhibition games going on right now...don't you find it interesting that college basketball has an exhibition season? Nothing wrong with it, but I just find it interesting. College Baseball sort of has that with the fall ball schedule, I think College Soccer has exhibition matches, I know ND has played the Mexican nat'l teams in the spring. I wonder if we'll have it for football someday.
As one who for several years has believed that the SEC was the best football conference from top to bottom, it's my uneducated opinion that this year the tide has turned (no pun intended). This year there are only two very good teams in the SEC, AL and FL, and one good team, GA. The rest are so-so to mediocre. There are four very good teams in the Big 12, TT, TX, OK, and OkSt, and two pretty good teams, MO and KS. The rest are so-so to mediocre. What does this say? Nothing, except that relative conference strength tends to ebb and flow over time.
1. Two of the best games I have watched this year were Texas and Oklahoma then Texas and Texas Tech. Not much in the way of defense, but unmatched offensive fireworks. 2. Seems all the best teams in the Big 12 are in the same division. Does anyone know what the three way tie breaker is? 3. Gators and Bama for the SEC. If both teams win out to the championship then if Bama wins they are in, if the Gators win we still need help but I like our chances much better after seeing the polls and computer polls today than I did yesterday. 4. The ACC and Big East both lack really good teams and are weak conferences. 5. USC is a very good team but if a one loss team makes it to the Championship game they may get hurt by the perceived weakness of the Pac 10 this year. 6. I don't see Tebow winning the Heisman this year and think McCoy, Bradford and Harrell have to be the front runners. Harrell is something else and he's carried my fantasy team. 7. Agree 8. Big Easy, see number 4, 9. I hope a couple of those teams make it to a BCS Bowl game. 10. Agree 11. Think you are probably correct about the Irish. 12. Agree 13. I don't expect football to have exhibition and I'm looking forward to the upcoming Gator BB season. Other, I agree completely with Sid about the ebb and flow of conference strength. The Big 12 looks awesome this year.
I think what the B12 has this year is just some incredibly talented offensive teams and the result has been some really great football games. Bob Stoops commented that he thought the perception of the B12 defenses is hurt by the fact that our offenses have been so terrific. But no matter what it's been the most fun B12 season I can ever remember. Terry
Bill, he's been on mine for two years. I doubt if he'll win the Heisman, but he sure if fun to watch.
