Kyle McCarthy is having a great year. He's a classic case of a kid who on signing day was a 3* player, he was listed by Rivals as an athlete and in that category he was listed at #68 in the class of 2005. Not #68 overall, but in the category of "athlete". We don't have 5*guys, but a lot of Ohio State defenses are loaded with guys who were 3* comming out of high school. Hopefully Corwin, Tenuta and the rest of the defensive staff will be able to take 3* players and coach'em up till we get our depth built up and we start getting some of those 5* guys like Charlie has gotten on offense. BTW his brother Dan was a 4* kid and ranked 14th at the category DB. Filer, Kapron-Lewis Moore, Johnson, McDonald, Fleming, Johnson, Blanton, Slaughter, Newman were all 4* players on defense in last years class. So help is on the way. We need even more for sure. But mainly we not only have to recruit but coach and develope them as well. One might argue that the difference between last years Texas defense and this years Texas defense is coaching (Muchamp), not talent level. Hopefully the combo of Brown and Tenuta will give us an edge not just in coaching x and o's but in developement . To me that's what Ohio State has got going for them, more than a team loaded with the 5* players you see at USC and UF on defense. Terry
Very, very good point. That possession could have been the knock out punch but instead it turned into a rally for the 'Heels.
OK Always the contrarian First, as Corey said the D wasn't that bad Sat. Our talented offense managed to put zero points on the board the last 20 min. or so. And although the turnovers hurt, the possession when we turned it over on downs failing on a 4th and 7 was just a killer. Did Charlie in his press conference explain why all our receivers but the safty valve were running downfield patterns. I didn't see one 10 yd. out pattern or a buttonhook. (the aim on 4th and 7 is to get 8 or more yds. isn't it?) Oh and the "once we learn to protect the football" claim doesn't wash with me. The last 2 games before this we turned the ball over ZERO times. We know how to protect the football (unless we're using different footballs at home). What we don't do is keep our poise on the road. At Charlie's presser did he address the very wierd ending of the game? What I saw was the ref spotting the ball for ND at the point where the receiver went down (the term is "down by contact.") I know in the NFL that ruling is not subject to video review since the refs have blown the play down and anything like a fumble recovery that happens afterward occurs after an "inadvertent whistle." (the college rules state that if an inadvertent whistle occurs the team that had possession retains possession) Now the review could have determined whether or not there had been a catch. Since the final ruling was not incomplete but a fumble, it necessarily follows that it was ruled a catch. My question is, if there had been a whistle how could they rule a fumble and recovery by NC? (remember originally they spotted the ball not where the NC player had recovered the ball but where the receiver was down)
Nope and it's a good question. I've seen it a thousand times in the Pro's and in college where the ball is thrown short of the 1st down marker in that situation. I never understand it. In that situation it would have been better forcing the ball into coverage hoping for a catch. If it was an int it would have gained some yardage at least, but if it worked it would be 1st down.
'Fess up, Gip. What's really eating at you is the fact that Ron Powlus is JC's QB coach, isn't it?
ND/UNC <r>O.K. guys, you can all get as technical about this as you want and say who's fault the losss was and who's is wasn't and we should have done this and CW should have done that but the bottom line is this......<br/> <br/> IF WE HADN'T TURNED THE BALL OVER AS MANY TIMES WE WOULD HAVE WON THE GAME! It's just that simple. <br/> <br/> All that crap I heard prior to the game about UNC having more SPEED and better ATHLETES and will be more physical was simply that, CRAP!!!<br/> <br/> Nobody got out coached, we lost because of turnovers!!! We outplayed them in just about every category, CHECK THE STATS! <br/> <br/> <br/> Well now that I got that out of my system, everybody have a good day. <br/> <br/> "THE HELL WITH WASHINGTON" <E></E></r>
The stats are very telling, even I was suprised when I looked at them. Our defense held them to 130 yds rushing and 200 yds passing. In todays hyped up offense world those are great numbers. But stats are for losers the only one that counts is the scoreboard. If Mo Crum holds on to that sure INT early in the game I think that would have hurt the confidence of the UNC QB, and if we had stopped them on 3rd and 18 we would have won the game. But we didn't. I just feel so positive about this team right now. Did you know that Armando avg 5.5 yds per carry yesterday? He's getting better. I don't know if we can run the table up to USC I hope we do. But this team has a lot of upside. This bye week for the team really comes at a good time in the schedule. Terry
ND/UNC <r>Terry,<br/> <br/> We just need to finish 8-4 and win a bowl game. Do that and we are sitting just fine. Of course I'll take anything better than that but realistically I know we are going to have at least 2 more losses. <E>8)</E> <br/> <br/> <br/> "THE HELL WITH WASHINGTON"</r>
Hey Terry, I didn't have it recorded so I waited for Coach D's breakdown on IE. As I remembered on the replay right after the play it was Wenger the center that got beaten on the play. Coach D's breakdown said the same. He came right up the middle. Clausen did a great job to avoid getting run over, the D lineman was lucky enough to just get his hand on the ball.
Charlie and Coach D don't agree, Charlie agree's with me. Us skinny guys stick together. The following is directly from Charlies press conference transcript.
I guess Charlie finds it easier to blame JC than a lineman who completely blew his block. Who ya going to beleive? Me, or your lying eyes?
I've seen you putt so I know to believe you when you are reading greens!! I don't know about your film analysis skills though!!
at this point in time, i feel like those cleveland indians fans in the movie Major League...sitting in the outfield in a raging debate about whether or not the ball was 'too high' to get out of the yard... Who gives a ****? It's gone.... Man, that's a good movie.. I think I am going to watch it now.
