What's with these Patriot guys anyway? Laptopgate? Notre Dame insists it wasn’t cheating By LARRY LAGE, AP Sports Writer 10 hours, 42 minutes ago EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP)—Charlie Weis insisted Notre Dame wasn’t trying to break the rules by having a laptop computer in its coaching box during a 23-7 loss to Michigan State on Saturday. “It wasn’t like there was somebody trying to do something illegal,” Weis said. Michigan State spokesman John Lewandowski said the school asked a liaison to the officials to remove the laptop after noticing one being used by the Fighting Irish. The liaison took the laptop out of the their coaching box during a break in the first half. “The first thought you have is, `Are they tracking tendencies or other data,”’ Lewandowski said. “You cannot use that type of that resource in the coaching box. That’s just like you can’t have a replay monitor.” Weis said the officials approached him about the laptop and then he asked offensive coordinator Mike Haywood about it. “I asked upstairs if there was one,” Weis recalled. “I was talking to Michael and he said, `No.’ Then, I guess one of the interns had one over there. Then I immediately told (the officials) that there was an intern (with a laptop) and he took it off a ledge and put it on the floor.” Weis said he told the officials that he wasn’t trying to do something improper while walking off the field at halftime. “The last thing I ever want to do is lie,” he said. Weis is 24-16 in three-plus seasons at Notre Dame after working as the offensive coordinator for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots from 2000-04. Belichick and the Patriots were fined and sanctioned by the NFL last year for video taping opponents sideline signals.
I never knew laptops were illegal, and I have to wonder why they are in the first place. It's not like they are so expensive that the poor teams couldn't afford one, plus what the heck do you do with a laptop anyway? Terry
If it was a student intern, would you like to bet that he was blogging somewhere??? I know that those became all the rage during the CWS Regionals a few years ago, and the NCAA killed that practice with fire.
It may not be so much the laptop being in the coaching box, but rather who it is being used to connect with. Nearer, my God, to thee...
Charlie said in his press conf it was a Student Mgr, no doubt he was blogging or posting or something he shouldn't have been doing to make him "the man" on some internet board or to his buddies. Bet he's no longer a student manager.
They should put a rocket under his ass. What an idiot. Now the media is already signing off the AP article of 'laptop gate' by conveniently mentioning Weis' ties to the Patriots... Let the Nancy Grace-like 'guilty by association' warpath begin.... ugh
Aw, even on the highly biased Purdue Sports List they're saying this is stupid and much ado about nothing... Of course those are all computer guys.
Guys, notice the wink and the razz in my post, I really don't give a **** either way, nor should anyone else. Charlie's integrity is second to none in my book. The game is played on the field. There is NO COMPUTER PROGRAM ON EARTH that can duplicate human effort and emotion and performance. COREY, you owe me a phone call Pal...
....much ado about nothing imho. The kid used poor judgement and I assume will suffer the consequences. Case closed in my book.
That I do and you will get it. I may need the use of some of your Marine pals. These Russian spammers are starting to piss me off a little bit. (long story short, but essentially, there are parts of my day in which I play an online cat/mouse game with them for my company). You will get it!
