Who knew! Friday (Mar 31st) is the 75th Anniv of Knute's death in a cornfield in Kansas. The Rocks Legacy Lives On
Thanks, Terry. I read the article you linked. Very interesting and informative. I wonder who the guy is in the photo with the SC on his jersey.
The guy in the SC jersey is Lou Gehrig according to the names at the bottom of the photo. Clever use of the eras megastar players from the greatest franchise in pro sports history to promote a big game for the greatest program in college football history. The Yankees and Notre Dame still hold those positions 8 decades later. The key to this photo is the guy to the right of Rockne, Christy Walsh. Walsh was a writer who was a pioneer in sports licensing. In the 20's he created the jock promotion industy representing such notables as Ruth, Rockne, and Gehrig. Wouldn't have been a problem getting the boys together in perhaps marketing's first Cross Promotion. Only problem might have been convincing Gehrig to be a Troy Boy. No doubt Babe got first choice. Christy Walsh was also the screenwriter for a 1931 movie "The Spirit of Notre Dame" about a Rockneesque coach and featuring two of The Four Horsemen, Miller and Crowley.
Jack, Once more I go, DUH! I didn't bother to look beneath the photo to see the names. That is really cool! Ruth, Gehrig, and Rockne. Priceless. Thanks for this very enlightening historical information.
I wondered who the guy next to Rockne was, I've never heard of Christy Walsh before. Now I have, and that's the rest of the story. Terry 8)
Today is the 75th Anniv of Rocks death. What a man, there are no cars named after Osborne, Bryant, Wilkerson, Hayes, Crisler, Lombardi,Royal,McKay,Schembechler, Leahy, Parsegian, Holtz, etc.... But there was the Rockne 6!!
I used to own a Ty Chrysler. It started off handling great but the steering wheel came off and I crashed into a tree.
