Tim Tebow seems to have a more mature outlook than his coach. How about it?.... excerpted from an article re-printed in BGI Gators, Meyer still miffed by UGA's celebration By CHIP TOWERS In his new book, "Urban's Way," Florida coach Urban Meyer makes it clear that Georgia's excessive celebration following its opening touchdown last season was a "big deal" and something that he will remember "forever." "That wasn't right. It was a bad deal," Meyer says in the book, which is scheduled for a September release. "And it will forever be in the mind of Urban Meyer and in the mind of our football team. ... So we'll handle it. And it's going to be a big deal." The Gators' coach was asked about that statement Wednesday at SEC Football Media Days what. "It was uncalled for," he said. "First of all it's against the rules. If you really look at it, some players could have been thrown out the game for leaving the bench. "As for the impact on the game ... I understand the motivation of it. It was a big deal. It was just a big deal." Quarterback Tim Tebow was asked how that episode might impact this year's game, scheduled for Nov. 1 in Jacksonville. Both teams have received first-place votes in preseason polls. "I think it will definitely intensify it that much more," Tebow said. "I think it will be a very big game, to say the least. It could be two of the best teams in the country playing for the right to play in the SEC championship and maybe for the national championship. They're a huge rival of ours, and I think that just increased that much more this past year. I think that will inspire us that much more. "As far the touchdown dance in the end zone, it didn't do anything but fire me up. I wasn't upset or anything. It was a good call by Coach [Mark] Richt because that changed their season. It gave their players a spark and some energy and something to be passionate about. Whether it was right or wrong is not up to me to say. Good for them."
I don't remember what Urban said about that stunt after the game, Bill or MCG probably can point us there. But Gator fans are used to their coach being outspoken, a decade of Steve Spurrier prepped them for that. Also guys who write books are encouraged, probably told, to write at least a few controversial things that will get people to buy the book and garner more publicity about the book. Jason Peter, the former Neb Cornhusker and drug addict/alcoholic and brother of Christian Peter also a former Cornhusker/Woman beater wrote a scathing criticism of Lou Holtz. Guess what he has been all over the place talking about his book, Jim Rhome had him on all they wanted to hear was what that duchebag had to say about Lou. Terry
There are a lot of intentional penalties to be really upset about. That wasn't one of them. Much ado about nothing, but it may sell books at least in Florida and Georgia.
I don't recall Meyer saying much about the penalty after the game or any other time except in his book. I don't agree with KP about this penalty. Having your whole team rush the field is asking for a fight to break out. I think it was dumb and bush league. Having said that I will also say we came right back with a score to tie the game and I don't blame that action for us losing the game. I do think it gives the Gators extra incentive.'
I would agree it was a bush league stunt, and while the Bulldogs won the game and their fans credit that with being the emotional impetus, it's hard to say as Gator fans have pointed out Tebow wasn't at 100% so how much that had to do with the Bulldogs winning is up to interpretation. I thought Tebow, as a player, answered the question properly. Meyer is trying to sell a book, you need some hooks to garner some publicity for the book. Terry
.. <t>I was listening to Finebaum at work the other day. Its not that I have a choice. Its that or Christian radio... <br/> <br/> So anyway, at SEC media day he was interviewing this big fat dude who covers the Gators.. I failed to catch his name. He made an interesting statement though.<br/> <br/> He said that.. going back to the 70s/80s, he had a personal relationship with each and every coach at Florida up until Urban Meyer. He said that he, and others say this as well, doesn't know the guy at all. He doesn't let people in.. The 'open, friendly and outspoken' Myer is not what they see on a daily basis.<br/> <br/> He also went on to speculate that if Florida doesn't play for, win or challenge for the NC in the next 4 years.. he could see Myer getting swept aside. He almost seemed to be hinting that Myer was not a 'good guy' and perhaps a bit shifty...<br/> <br/> None of that matters worth a hill of beans though.. I just found it interesting.</t>
That could well be Terry. Still, some of these old boys have been around that program a lot longer than the coaches.. and they will continue to be there long after they are gone. Some bridges are best left unburned.
BTW, Feinbaum used to be on XM and I listened to him on my way home from work, always interesting to an outsider. The shows after that Auburn/Bama game where they sacked Brody Coyle like a million times were just hilarious. I miss him. Terry
I think Finebaum is okay for folks that are not fans of Auburn or Alabama. Finebaum says things to piss off Tiger/Tide fans just to generate ratings.
Corey, I can't remember the name of that media guy right now but probably will later. If I have the right guy he is from Jacksonville and a big butt. If he doesn't have access to Meyer he might go look in the mirror. I'm leaving but when I recall his name I'll be back later.
I'm pretty sure it was David Lamm. He's not well thought of by Gators and I don't put any stock in what he says.
That's it <t>I believe its that Lamm guy. <br/> <br/> One thing I've learned about Finebaum is that he doesn't blow a lot of smoke. He says things that are VERY unpopular with Tide/Tiger fans, but that's because they don't want to hear it...not that it isn't true.<br/> <br/> Florida fans seem to have this 'step with it, or step aside' mentality which is a good place for Urban to be... As Finebaum has stated repeatedly recently, this Lamm guy is far from the only person to say this. SOS might have been out spoken and upset people, but he was still approachable. He might have had a love/hate relationship with the media..but there was still a relationship. The word seems to be that Urban just locks everyone out.<br/> <br/> I'm not saying this to pick a fight with you Gator fans. IDGAF one way or the other. Hell, I like most of ya here. I'm just saying this because:<br/> <br/> 1) Urban has never had to sustain a program. Everywhere he's been, he's left a swath of bitter resentment. The people who hate him the most, are the people who bought into what he was selling. Most likely because they trusted him, while he was packing his bags.<br/> <br/> 2) Urban has the rep of a snake oil salesman. He's still doing a lot of 'promise one thing, deliver another' on the recruiting trail. That's a dangerous game. Its also not one of a guy planning on planting roots.. or maybe he doesn't know better?<br/> <br/> 3) People get intoxicated by winning. He's won.. this season will tell us alot about him to be sure. He came in on a very solid talent foundation that the Zookster left him..but I dont think the Gator fans have taken a good look at the guy leading the ship. He's dumped everyone who has given him their best in the past.. What's the old saying about the girl who cheats on her man to be with you??.......</t>
Corey, I sure don't get the same kind of vibes about Meyer that you are putting out here. So far in three years at Florida he has won a National Championship, has Gator football players making the best grades I ever remember, graduating more players than ever. He stresses living the right way, he is one heck of a recruiter. From what I read he doesn't buddy up to much of the media like a lot of coaches, but that's the way he is. Gator fans love him. Notre Dame wanted him bad enough to fly a plane out to Utah after the Gators had been after him quite a while and do their best to get him at Notre Dame. We were fortunate enough to have him come to Florida and most Gators thank their lucky stars he is a Gator. We also think he is going to be around a long time. As to Lamm he has little credibility with Gator fans and has not for quite sometime, but I'll let you decide for yourself how credible he is. I'm not sure where you get this swath of bitter resentment. He had head coaching jobs at Bowling Green and Utah prior to going to Florida. Both thos programs were in much better shape when he left that when he arrived. Anyway that's the way I see things.
LOL .... David Lamm and the other Urban Meyer detractors are simply ..... what Meyer is not. 8) And, IMO, some college football fans are just upset with Meyer because he took the UF job .......... and won an MNC.
well <r>just in case you think I am making this up, a quick google produces<br/> <br/> <URL url="http://www.utefans.net/lies.php"><s></s>http://www.utefans.net/lies.php<e></e></URL><br/> <br/> <URL url="http://media.www.bgnews.com/media/storage/paper883/news/2002/12/12/Sports/Meyers.Lies.Cut.Ties.Here-1288075.shtml"><s></s><LINK_TEXT text="http://media.w...es.Cut.Ties.Here-1288075.shtml</LINK_TEXT><e></e></URL><br/> <br/> Both of those articles written long before he won an NC at Florida. In both articles, you will find the reference to 'lying' quite often. I think you may be correct that there isn't as much resentment at Bowling Green. They sort of expected it. Utah, that's another story. Its not that they didn't see themselves as a stepping stone either.. Its that the guy went so far out of his way to lie about it. Everyone who has bought into what the guy says winds up hating him.<br/> <br/> However, those who are on his side right now laugh at the jealous ex-employers as if they should have known their role in the bigger picture.<br/> <br/> You guys think I'm making this up, but I'm just making an observation.</r>
oh <r>for the record, don't you (or anyone) dare put me down as one of those people upset that Myer took the job at Florida.<br/> <br/> I don't think we ever stood a shot at the guy. I think the deal was done and he was Florida bound a long time before we ever got off our butts to look.<br/> <br/> Per Urban's own words:<br/> <QUOTE><s> </e></QUOTE> that is from this article here. notice the meta-title of the page. "Meyer says Irish never made an offer"<br/> <br/> Now, he wouldn't be fibbing here would he? Or are you just wrong?<br/> <br/> <URL url="http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1938542"><s></s>http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1938542<e></e></URL></r>
halftime <r>now as much as I would love to continue this fun into the wee hours, you will have to excuse me. For the first time in a long time, I actually have a kid free and job free evening. This somewhat newly single dad has a birthday gathering to attend. One where the whiskey and the women will have four things in common: They will be smooth, golden, 25 years old and mine...<br/> <br/> I will catch up with this in the morning. Well, maybe the afternoon.<br/> <br/> <E></E></r>
