1. There is no incidental facemask/5yd penalty anymore, any facemask is 15yds. I don't care for this one. 2. Kickoffs out of bounds are placed at the 40 yd line. Did we really need this one? I don't think so. 3. 25 second clock has been replaced by the 40 second clock, which will start as soon as the previous play is blown dead, not when the ball is spotted. 4. When a ball carrier is knocked out of bounds (or runs out I'd guess) the clock starts as soon as the ball is spotted and marked ready for play. It used to be the clock didn't start till the ball was snapped for the next play. This is really going to affect strategy. It used to be teams trying to perserve the clock would run the ball out of bounds, throw the ball to the sidelines and the reciever would step out of bounds. That won't be as effective this year. I don't know if I like this or not. Terry
Terry, does number four have some limits like the clock not starting the during the last two minutes? They are trying to speed up the game and in the case of the face mask take away the judgment of the official as to the severity of the face mask. I don't like that one either.
Not according to what I read Bill. So if you make a 1st down with 2:55 or less to go in the game and your opponent is out of timeouts...GAME OVER. Team makes a first down with ~ 2:55 left (40sec before the 1st down play (2:15 left), 5sec play (2:10 left), 40 sec before 2nd down play (1:30 left), 5sec play (1:25 left), 40 sec before 3rd down play (0:45 left), 5 sec play (0:40) 40 sec takes it down to 0:00
Bill after looking around... The official NCAA rules also state that after the ball goes out of bounds the clock starts on the snap (not on the spot) in the last two minutes of the half. For me if they want to speed up the game, they need to limit the TV timeouts. That is what really slows the game down. Terry
So if your burner speedster is on a fly pattern and the QB is sacked for a 10 yd loss he has to get all the way back down field to the huddle for the next play? Seems like he's going to get pretty tired after a couple of plays like that.
Gip makes a good point. Perhaps coaches will need to tell players in advance of conditional substitutions that depend on the outcome of certain plays. "Down and out" could take on a whole new meaning.
Burner, Speedster???? As a ND fan I have no reference....now that 10 yd sack for a loss, I'm well familiar with!!
Speaking of lengths of games. ND fans complain mightily about the length of NBC games, but here is a link to stats on televised games for 2005-2007. CBS games last year were the longest, which is mostly SEC games if I'm right. They averaged 3:47. While NBC games averaged 3:34 and ABC and ESPN games were 3:28. So ND games aren't as long as SEC games. Do you SEC guys feel like CBS games are too long? I haven't heard that complaint. College Game Length
I can't recall right off how many of the games were on CBS but there was a plethora of multiple OT games in the SEC last year. I know ESPN had a bunch of them but I'm sure that CBS had their share as well. I would imagine that would skew the averages a bit.
since <t>I've been to both SEC games that were national broadcasts for CBS and ND games on NBC, there's really no comparison between the two.<br/> <br/> I know those are the numbers they put out and all, but the SEC games still have a nice flow to them.<br/> <br/> The ND games are as miserable as bumper to bumper traffic with the TV timeout.</t>
Gawd I hate it when that fat guy with the headphones walks out onto the field... Seems like a lifetime before he strolls off! I've never felt like the games were too long. Not even multi OT games. Do people who love collge football really think "Gee... I wish this would be over soon!"??? Assuming they aren't losing 48-0!!!
The games aren't too long but the TV timeouts do seem to break up the flow. When you are at the game it really bothers me. At least at home you can get up and grab another beer during the commercials.
At home, you can wait until the game is starting half time and then start TiVo playing. Just fast forward through the commercials and half time show. You will get to the end of the game about the same time that it is ending live.
I agree, the TV timeouts are much more annoying when you are at the game than they are when you are home watching it.
