I for one would completely enjoy scrapping Miami as a major non-con add on for Florida or even FSU also to schedule instead some of the following as described in this link:

    http://www.gatorsports.com/article/20080708/NEWS/431101888/1090/gatorsfootball&title=Dream_matchups_for_UF_football

It might get a little buzz going on this board as well.

Maybe one day Foley will find a way.

As long as Miami is that occasional add-on for a home and home it's not going to happen Terry.

I can see keeping FSU as an annual rival....maybe....but I do believe we could jettison Miami and still be OK in S. Fla recruiting wise.

Then again maybe Spurrier got killed in S. Fla in the 90s when UF was not playing Miami.

I don't know, Charleston Southern and Southern Cal sound almost the same. And why limit yourself to Florida "state" when you can play the universal Florida "international."

Just for the record I don't believe Florida has to play intersectional games to have a tough schedule. As long as they have FSU (even if they are down from their incredible run in the 90's) and also play Miami that's a very fair non-conf schedule that can't be denigrated just because they don't leave the state of Fla except for SEC games.

I think UF fans would love to have some of those good intersectional games, I know Texas and Ohio State fans really liked their series. I know that Texas fans liked traveling to ND back in the mid 90's to play the Irish and the return trip to Austin was a very big deal, largest crowd in the history of Memorial Stadium at the time. Scott has posted a number of times how he enjoys the A & M road trips to places outside the B12 territory, I just wish he'd make the trip to Austin one of these days!.

It's only occassionally, but in the years that it is scheduled it's hard to ask a team to play two potentially elite level teams out of conference in the same season. I, as you noted, am of the feeling that a conference team is foolish to play more than one out of conference game against a traditonal college football powerhouse. It happens and USC will be doing it this year with Ohio State and Notre Dame, but it's above and beyond what is reasonable to put together a good schedule.

    on that note

<t>let's not forget that Ohio State is on the schedule now for USC replacing Nebraska... It isn't USC's fault that the Huskers got 'Callahan'ed'. They've also played Arkansas.. Virginia is on their slate this year as well.

Prior to that USC had lined up Virginia Tech, Auburn, Kansas State (when they were good) and Colorado..
Kudo's to USC, they play a above the line non-conf schedule. I wouldn't do it I were them, but at least under Pete Carroll it hasn't been a problem for them. When was the last time they lost a non-conference game anyway? When the Irish beat them in his first year??? That might be the only loss.

Personally I think that if you're gonna have four non-conf. games no more than 2 should be of the pushover variety...the other two don't necessarily have to be "powerhouses" but they should be major players.

I understand the economics of wanting all the home games instead of home and homes but it still galls me...especially when the only tix I ever get eligible for are the pushovers.

USC's last regular season non-conference loss was Kansas State in '02.

    Stu,

As long as the Bull Sh!t Championship system is in place, marquee games will continue to dwindle.
In this system it is paramount to minimize losses, and while SOS occaisionally comes into play the major conference teams have little incentive to risk a loss to a top competitor.
Their conference sched will generally carry them high enough assuming they don't drop a game.

    PLAYOFF NOW!!! :x

Actually Corey it is when the same situation arises when the NCAA was allowing a 12th game on a trial basis every few years. It's when the calendar falls in such a way that there is one more weekend to the football season that in other years. We are in that situation this year and we have scheduled Miami and then an off week before playing Tennessee.

So far we have scheduled Miami every time that situation arises, this is the 3rd time with the 4th time being a few years down the road.

Personally I am like MCG and would like to see us not schedule Miami every time and schedule other schools.

The down side of scheduling a game like that when you do not have the extra week is that the game has to be scheduled when there is likely no break.

As to the strength of schedule I'll leave that to another post. However the above is the way the Miami game is scheduled.</r>

I agree Terry, fortunately for the Gators this year while we have Miami and FSU scheduled, neither one of them are as good as they have been the last 15 years or so.

While I can agree with that Stu, sometimes you can't get the game. We had a game scheduled with UCF that they canceled and we couldn't get an opponent of the same level to replace them.

Bill when you schedule teams out 4 or 5 years (or more) you really have no idea what you are going to get. You might catch them with their best team or a so so team. That's what's going on with Miami and FSU right now, I have no doubt that both programs will be back on top sometime in the future.
